Gero Onsen Shirasagi-no-YuAlkaline simple spring Source: Gero Onsen's centrally managed supply, blended from 12 sources and distributed to facilities at bathing temperatureSource temperature: 55.6°C in the facility's current onsen data
pH: 9.1
Shirasagi-no-Yu uses centrally managed Gero Onsen water. Its current main pages do not give a complete pool-by-pool breakdown of added water, heating, circulation and disinfection, so the bath is not described as 100% free-flowing.Day-use bath. Shirasagi-no-Yu is one of Gero's simplest low-cost ways to bathe in a formal public bath with hinoki indoor bathing and tatami flooring. Choose elsewhere if you want outdoor baths, a sauna or supplied toiletries.

pH: Not confirmed in current official material
The main large bath uses natural carbonated spring water and is heated to about 36°C. The separate 'Source As It Is' bath uses the spring at about 22°C without storage or heating. Current pages do not disclose complete treatment details for every other pool.Day-use bath. Himeshaga-no-Yu is for visitors who want to feel the contrast between its roughly 22°C unheated carbonated source bath and the heated pool around 36°C. The limited weekly schedule and remote setting make advance planning essential.
MutsumikanAlkaline simple spring Source: Gero Onsen water; the inn does not identify a separate individual sourceSource temperature: 55°C at the source
pH: 9.18
The inn calls its system semi-free-flowing. Fresh spring water is continually added, while some water is filtered and recirculated to remove sediment; overflow is drained rather than reused, and filtered water is not returned through the fresh-water inlet. The inn also says spring water is used in the large-bath showers and taps. This is not a fully non-circulating, 100% free-flowing system.Ryokan. A good lodging choice if being close to Gero Station and having spring water throughout the public bathing area matter more than a grand river view or a large selection of baths. It is not an option for a casual day-use soak.

Local history

How the town developed

Local accounts place Gero’s discovery around Mount Yunomine in either the Engi era (901–923) or the Tenryaku era (947–957). Around 1265, the mountain spring reportedly stopped flowing and later reappeared beside the Hida River, inspiring the heron legend. The medieval poet Banri Shūkyū and early Edo scholar Hayashi Razan both praised Gero as a notable hot spring. Since 1974, a central system has combined water from multiple wells and supplied inns in the hot-spring district.
