Staying at Fugaku in Gero: River Views, Stairs and a Private Onsen
Fugaku pairs a Hida River bath with a reservable private spring bath. Check the stairs, room-bath water and smoking status before choosing a room.
Fugaku's view-bath suite sounds like the obvious upgrade, but its hinoki tub is not supplied with hot-spring water. The inn's natural spring is in the shared baths and the reservable private bath. There is another practical point that matters more than room size: reaching the fifth-floor and basement public baths means using stairs.
Check the bath route before you book
Fugaku has a fifth-floor public bath with a river view, an outdoor bath and a second public bath on the basement level. The inn states that there is no elevator serving either bath floor. It also says the building has no fully accessible guest room. If anyone in your party has difficulty with stairs, ask the inn about the actual route from the assigned room to the baths and dining area before committing.
The two public bath areas switch between men and women. The fifth-floor bath is listed for men from 3pm to 11pm and for women from 11:30pm to 9:30am; the basement bath follows the reverse schedule. The outdoor bath has separate evening and morning opening periods. Check the posted schedule on arrival in case operating hours have changed.
The room bath is for the view, not the spring water
The riverside Japanese-Western suite sleeps two to five and includes a hinoki guest-room tub. Fugaku's room information explicitly says this bath is not hot-spring water. Other room types are not described as having in-room onsen either. Choose the suite for its river-facing outlook, beds and extra room, not as a substitute for a private natural spring bath.
For a private soak in Gero water, reserve the Shigaraki-style rental bath. The listed rate is ¥1,100 for 45 minutes, between 3 and 10pm; reservations are required and the published rule allows one session per group. Ask when booking, as a preferred time may no longer be available by check-in.
Station transfers and meals
JR Gero Station is about a ten-minute walk away. Fugaku also offers a free pickup from 2:30 to 7:30pm and a drop-off service from 7:30 to 10am, by prior arrangement. The outdoor parking area is listed for about 30 cars. Contact the inn with your train time if you plan to use its transfer rather than walk.
Dinner and breakfast are generally served in the room, though some plans use the dining room. Dinner seatings are listed at 5:30, 6:00, 6:30 and 7:00pm; breakfast at 7:30, 8:00 and 8:30am. Arrival after 7:30pm may mean dinner cannot be served. The 16- and 10-mat Japanese rooms are not designated non-smoking rooms; the inn says it can deodorize them. If smoke sensitivity is a concern, confirm the room's status instead of relying on deodorizing.
Tattoos and spring-water handling
Fugaku's current policy says guests with tattoos cannot use the public or outdoor baths, regardless of size or type; covering them with stickers is not accepted. The policy does not clearly state whether tattooed guests may use the private bath, so ask the inn directly before booking if that would affect your stay.
The inn receives centrally managed Gero water, described as alkaline simple spring water with pH 9.1. The published 55.6°C source figure and 1,250 litres per minute describe the managed supply, not a private well at Fugaku. Public baths use a combination of fresh inflow and recirculation, with some reheating and chlorine disinfection. The private bath is described as source-fed flow-through, but the page does not publish the same full treatment breakdown for it.
If you want to compare Fugaku with a station-side inn, see Mutsumikan's stay guide. For a day visit rather than an overnight stay, start with the Gero day-use bath guide.
