Local history

How the town developed

Kinosaki’s origin story centres on the monk Dōchi. According to local tradition, after training near Mount Kannabe he began praying for a spring in 717; water appeared about three years later, giving rise to the hot-spring town. By the Edo period, Kinosaki was an important bathing destination in northern Hyogo. Its public-bath culture and yukata strolls became local traditions. Today, the riverside, willows, wooden inns and public baths still make bathing and staying in town part of one connected experience.
