Staying at Suihoen in Gero: Main Building or Yukatei?

Suihoen is a small kaiseki inn on the hillside above Gero. Its room list is current at 15 rooms, including eight with an outdoor or semi-outdoor bath. The more useful decision is whether to stay in the main building or the Yukatei annex: Yukatei has a free guest-only private bath, but it does not accept children of elementary-school age or younger.

Pick the building before comparing room prices

The main building has three barrier-free suites with indoor and outdoor baths, one semi-outdoor-bath room, two outdoor-bath rooms and three standard Japanese rooms. The annex has two garden-bath rooms and four standard rooms. A room's private tub is confirmed by its listing, but the inn's public room descriptions do not establish that every in-room bath uses natural hot-spring water. If private Gero water is the reason for paying more, confirm the exact room name and water source before booking.

The main building is the place to start for families and guests who need one of the three specifically designated barrier-free suites. Those room descriptions do not make the whole property step-free, so check the route from room to bath and restaurant for your particular needs.

Yukatei is an adults-oriented annex and does not admit children of elementary-school age or younger. In return, its guests can use the private indoor bath called Musou-no-Yu without charge during their stay; the published access window is 2pm to 10am. This benefit also applies to guests in a standard Yukatei room, not only those who book one of its two garden-bath rooms.

Public bathing and private-bath options

Men’s and women’s shared facilities each include an indoor bath and an elevated outdoor bath. Overnight guests may use them from 2 p.m. until 10 a.m. the next day.

Suihoen describes the water as an alkaline simple spring. Its published analysis records a source temperature of 55.6°C and a 2022 bath sample of 39°C, with residual chlorine at 1.0 mg/L. The current temperature and treatment method for each tub are not stated.

Guests in the main building can request the paid Mutsumi-no-Yu private bath, which has both indoor and outdoor sections. The listed session is 45 minutes for ¥2,000, available until midnight with last reception at 9pm. Ask about a slot when booking or on arrival; tattoo access is not clearly covered in the published rules, so confirm directly if relevant.

When an upgrade is useful

A standard room plus one private-bath session may be enough for a couple or family who simply want to bathe together once. A room with its own tub is more useful if you plan to bathe at different times, want privacy throughout the stay or prefer not to coordinate around a shared booking slot. Those benefits do not prove the room tub contains natural spring water; get that confirmed separately.

Hida beef and seasonal kaiseki are central to the inn's offer. Dinner is usually served in one of its dining rooms, with in-room dining limited to certain rooms or plans. The inn lists check-in between 3 and 6pm and asks dinner guests to arrive by 6:30pm. If your train or drive may run late, confirm whether the meal can still be served before choosing a two-meal plan.

For children aged two to five who do not need meals or bedding, the listed facility charge is ¥2,200; it is waived for children under two. Other child rates depend on meal and bedding choices. Yukatei's age restriction applies regardless of room type, so check the building name when selecting a plan.

Getting to the hillside property

Suihoen is about a 15-minute walk or four-minute drive from JR Gero Station. It offers free pickup by advance reservation, coordinated with trains arriving after 2pm. Give the inn your train time when you book or before departure. The property lists 24 free parking spaces and three standard EV chargers.

Gero City taxes are separate from the room rate. The bathing tax is ¥150 per adult per night; an accommodation tax was introduced in October 2025.
