Where to Stay in Gero Onsen: Station Side, Yunoshima or Mori?

Gero is compact, but its hotels do not all sit on one flat street. The Hida River divides the town, and some properties are uphill or farther toward Mori. With a small daypack, these distances may feel minor. Add a large suitcase, rain or an early train and the same crossing can shape the whole stay.

Station side: for bags and an early train

Stay near Gero Station if you are arriving by JR and leaving by train the next morning, especially if Gero is a one-night stop between Nagoya and Takayama. You can leave your bags at the hotel, cross into the onsen streets without them, then get back to the platform without retracing a long route.

The trade-off is that the traditional hot-spring streets, public baths and museum are across the river or farther into Yunoshima. It is walkable, but you will cross back and forth if you return to the hotel between activities. A station-side property works best when the room is a practical base rather than the centrepiece of the evening.

Yunoshima and Shirasagi-bashi: for an evening on foot

The Yunoshima area gathers the shrine, Gero Onsen Museum and Shirasagi-no-yu around the hot-spring streets. Staying nearby makes it easier to go out after dinner, stop at a footbath or visit a public bath without planning another ride back.

This is the most convenient base if you have booked a ryokan dinner but still want to walk along the river afterward—or if your accommodation does not include dinner and you want to stay around the town centre. Check the inn’s location on a map rather than assuming “central” means level ground; some properties are uphill from the river.

Mori: for the morning market and Gassho Village

Mori is the better fit if your next morning is built around Ideyu Morning Market and Gero Onsen Gassho Village. In 2026, the market runs 7 March–5 December, 08:00–12:00, weather permitting. It is below Gassho Village, which opens at 08:30. From Gero Station, the market is about 30 minutes on foot or four minutes by bus; Gassho Village is about 20 minutes on foot or six minutes by bus.

That location can save a morning return trip, but it is less convenient if you plan to spend the evening in Yunoshima. If your hotel advertises a shuttle, check which stops it serves and its operating hours. Do not assume you can request a ride at any time.

Let check-out decide

If you will board a JR train soon after checking out, favour the station side or confirm a reliable ride to the station. If the first plan is another walk through Yunoshima, stay near the central streets. If you want the market at opening and then Gassho Village, Mori gives that morning a more direct start.

For large luggage, distance alone is not enough. Before booking, check the actual walking route, stairs or slopes, whether the inn collects guests at the station, when dinner starts, and whether it will hold your bags after checkout. A map’s ten-minute estimate does not account for a steep approach or an awkward bridge crossing.

Driving? Ask the hotel about its own parking

Gero’s municipal parking is public parking, not an extension of every hotel’s room rate. The tourism association lists ¥100 per 20 minutes and a 24-hour maximum of ¥1,500. Ask your accommodation whether parking is free, whether spaces need reserving and if you can leave the car there before check-in or after checkout. A narrow final approach can matter more than the highway route, so review the last few turns before you set off.
