When to Visit Gero Onsen: Cherry Blossoms, Summer Fireworks and Autumn Leaves
Gero’s blossoms and autumn colour move through the valley over several weeks. Check the annual festival and fireworks schedule before booking around an event.
Gero City runs from the Hida River valley up into the mountains, so there is no one “best week” for blossoms or autumn colour. Mid-April is a useful bet for flowers around town; early November is better for leaves near the hot-spring district. The mountains turn earlier, but a remote viewpoint is only worth the detour if the bus or drive works for your day.
The easiest time to visit depends on the area
| Season | What to look for | Where it fits best | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late March–late April | Cherry blossoms, with timing varying by area | Station-side trees and the Hida River in town; later blossoms at Ujo Park | Gero’s north–south elevation changes can shift flowering by several weeks |
| June–August | Green mountain scenery and the Gero Onsen Festival | Riverfront events and evening fireworks when scheduled | Dates, traffic restrictions and viewing access are announced for each year |
| Early October–mid-November | Mountain colour followed by foliage around town | Ontake, Maze or Iwate Gorge early; Gassho Village, Ujo Park and Onsenji later | Maze and Iwate Gorge are in different directions; do not combine them without a car and a realistic schedule |
| December–March | Snowy scenery and winter fireworks in some years | The riverfront after checking the event notice | Winter fireworks are weather-dependent; bank on the soak, not the show |
Spring: blossom dates depend on where you go
The city office cherry trees usually flower around late March and reach full bloom in early April. Blossoms along the river near Gero Ohashi tend to come later, around mid-April, while the weeping cherries at Ujo Park often continue into the second half of the month. Mid-April is a useful window if you want to stay in town and combine flowers with a walk by the Hida River, though actual bloom dates shift each year.
Gassho Village has blossoms near its entrance, but the Saijiki no Mori section climbs uphill. Families with a stroller or anyone managing sore knees can see the houses and central lanes without taking on the woodland slope. For a longer walk, the riverfront and town streets are easier to keep flexible.
Nashiro-zakura is a more involved evening outing: it is about a 25-minute walk from Yakiishi Station, and the return train matters if you stay for the lights. Check the year’s illumination announcement and train times before setting out. On a one-night visit, the town riverbank is simpler to pair with dinner and an onsen.
Summer: plan around the festival date
Gero’s summer festival runs over several days, but the parade, dragon dance and fireworks do not all take place on the same evening. The 2026 festival ran August 1–4, with the summer fireworks show on August 3; those dates have passed. The next schedule should be checked before booking a weekend. Lodging within walking distance of the central area can make the evening easier, but a river-view room does not guarantee a clear view: building, floor and window direction all matter.
July and August afternoons can be hot. Put outdoor walks in the morning, take a break indoors during the hottest part of the day, and leave the riverfront for evening only when the event’s access and traffic plan is published. If you stay uphill or outside town, check the last shuttle or bus before committing to the show.
Autumn: the town’s colour comes later
Colour usually appears first at higher elevations. Ontake’s mountain roads may turn in early October, followed by the Maze River area around mid-October and Iwate Gorge later in the month. Gassho Village and Ujo Park are often better bets in early November; Onsenji Temple tends to colour around mid-November.
Maze and Iwate Gorge are separate excursions, not adjacent stops on a casual walk. Without a car, choose one and check the bus in both directions. Near town, Ujo Park’s riverside path is a gentler option than Onsenji’s 173 steps. After rain or leaf fall, take extra care on the temple stairs and waterfall paths. On a checkout morning, leave time to collect luggage and get back to the station.
Winter: check the fireworks notice before you book
Gero’s winter fireworks are usually held on Saturday evenings between January and March, but each season has its own program and weather cancellations. The 2025–26 series ran from January 10 to March 28, 2026, and is over. As of September 27, 2026, a later winter series had not been announced on the city’s event page. Do not use last season’s dates to book this year’s trip.
The riverbank gets cold after dark. Check the city notice on the day, bring proper outerwear rather than relying on a yukata, and allow for the crowd on the walk back. Snow around Gassho Village can make slopes and steps slippery, so shorten the visit if travelling with children or older relatives.
For an overnight stay, Suimeikan is around three minutes from the station, while Yunoshimakan sits uphill and works best if you plan to spend more of the evening at the inn. Kawakamiya Kasuitei is a smaller property about a 15-minute walk from the station; confirm its pickup arrangements if you will have luggage. See the Gero stay-area guide to compare locations.
