Shinzaemon-no-Yu or Tsuruya? Choose by How You Need to Bathe

Compare Shinzaemon-no-Yu and Tsuruya by bathing together, tattoos, morning hours, washing facilities, spring water and private-bath access.

The practical difference is simple: Shinzaemon-no-Yu is the better-equipped public facility, while Tsuruya is the option for a private bath shared by one booking group. They are not interchangeable. Shinzaemon has no family bath and prohibits tattoos; Tsuruya has four bookable private baths, but all of its baths use its own strongly acidic spring water.

Need to bathe together? Book Tsuruya

Tsuruya private bathPublished terms
Price¥3,000 per 50-minute session (about HK$151 / NT$613)
Day-use hoursNoon–5 p.m.
Busy daysDay-use admission may stop around 3 p.m.; check before travelling

The private room suits a parent helping a young child, companions who cannot use separate gendered baths, or anyone wanting more privacy.

Privacy does not make the water milder. Tsuruya says its public and open-air baths, as well as the private baths, are supplied 100% by its own spring. The water is listed at pH 1.5. If your decision is about a child’s first experience with Zao’s acidic spring, read the toddler bathing guide before booking.

Want a morning bath, a proper wash or time to rest? Shinzaemon

Shinzaemon-no-YuPublished terms
Hours10 a.m.–6 p.m.
Last entry5:30 p.m.
Adult admission¥1,000 (about HK$50 / NT$204)

The facility has indoor bathing, washing facilities, places to rest, a restaurant and a shop. It is more practical when you want to spend a few hours rather than arrive, soak and leave.

The main choice is between pools. Shiroku-no-yu blends spring water with fresh water, which the facility describes as gentler for people with weaker skin and young children. Other outdoor baths use undiluted source water; its indoor artificial mineral bath is not a natural Zao spring. For details on water and aftercare, see the sensitive-skin guide.

Shinzaemon has no private or family bath. Its rules prohibit tattoos and body paint. A single-person box sauna is not an alternative for a couple or family to bathe together.

The timing decides more than the map

Shinzaemon’s 10 a.m. opening gives it an advantage for a morning visit. Tsuruya does not begin day use until noon, and admission can close early when the inn is busy. Both facilities are in the village, but Tsuruya is directly across from the bus terminal; Shinzaemon is a walk farther into town. If you are arranging a no-car day trip, leave room for that difference and check the bus timetable separately.

ChooseWhen it fits
Shinzaemon-no-YuYou want washing facilities, a longer rest, an earlier opening, or an indoor bath distinct from the natural spring.
TsuruyaYour group needs a private room and can arrive during the shorter day-use window.
Neither without checkingYou have tattoos, a skin concern, or need a confirmed policy for a child or diaper use.

Tsuruya does not publish a universal minimum age or diaper rule on its FAQ, so confirm your child’s situation directly. Shinzaemon publishes specific child-entry rules; check the facility’s current terms. For more options, compare the three communal baths in Zao.
