How to Get from Sendai to Zao Onsen: Bus, Train and the Right Zao

Plan the trip from Sendai to Yamagata’s Zao Onsen by bus or JR. See the transfer at Yamagata Station and avoid the separate Miyagi Zao route.

The dependable year-round route from Sendai to Yamagata’s Zao Onsen is a two-leg trip: travel to Yamagata Station by highway bus or JR, then change to the local bus for Zao Onsen. A direct winter coach has operated in past seasons, but its latest published timetable ended on March 15, 2026. There is one other detail worth checking before you board: a bus labelled “Zao” from Sendai may go to Togatta Onsen in Miyagi, not the hot-spring village in Yamagata.

First, check which Zao is on your ticket

The bus route here goes to Zao Onsen in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture. The terminal is Zao Onsen Bus Terminal, near the Zao Ropeway and the three small communal bathhouses. Dai-Rotenburo operates seasonally.

Sendai also has a direct highway-bus route for Togatta Onsen and Zao Town in Miyagi Prefecture. That is a different destination, in a different prefecture. The Miyagi bus route lists Togatta Onsen and the Zao Town office as stops; neither is a transfer point for Yamagata’s Zao Onsen. Before buying a ticket, make sure the destination is Zao Onsen Bus Terminal in Yamagata City, not simply a stop with “Zao” in its name.

The all-season plan: Sendai to Yamagata, then up the mountain

Highway bus to Yamagata Station

Miyagi Kotsu and Yamagata Kotsu’s Sendai–Yamagata highway bus is the simplest first leg if you are starting near Sendai Station. The current timetable, revised April 1, 2026, is frequent through the day. It is a capacity-based service rather than a reserved-seat coach, so boarding is in queue order and a full bus can mean waiting for the next departure. The operator says it generally does not add extra services when buses fill up. There is no toilet onboard or scheduled rest stop, so take care of that before boarding. The adult fare is ¥1,100 one way (about HK$55 / NT$225).

The ride usually takes around 75–80 minutes, traffic permitting. In Sendai, use the stop shown on the current timetable; the operator lists the Sendai Station stop on Aoba-dori, not the east-side stop used by the seasonal Zao service. Leave room for road delays when connecting in Yamagata. A five-minute transfer on a map is not much protection if the bus arrives late.

JR Senzan Line to Yamagata Station

The JR Senzan Line is the other practical first leg. Trains run directly between Sendai and Yamagata, with the trip taking roughly an hour on the faster services; check the JR timetable for the departure that fits your day. Rail avoids highway congestion, though it is still exposed to disruption from weather or railway incidents. Either way, the final stretch to Zao Onsen is by bus.

From Yamagata Station, Yamagata Kotsu buses run to Zao Onsen Bus Terminal. The adult one-way fare is ¥1,200 (about HK$60 / NT$245), and the ride takes roughly 40 minutes. Timings vary by service and season, so use the operator’s current route page rather than an old screenshot. If you are planning a day trip, check the last bus back before setting your return train or Sendai coach; the mountain leg is the part that limits how late you can stay.

That transfer is also useful if you want food, a convenience store or a luggage stop in the city before going uphill. It is less appealing with a tight connection, a large group, or several suitcases. If the extra change is what worries you, compare the village’s terminal-area lodging with other bases in the Zao Onsen stay-area guide.

A direct Sendai–Zao coach is seasonal, not an all-year shortcut

That season has ended. Do not plan around its dates or departure times until a new notice appears.

When the direct service is running, it saves a transfer in Yamagata. The trade-off is a limited seasonal schedule and a reservation requirement. If the published dates do not cover your trip—or the bus is full—the year-round route through Yamagata remains the fallback. Recheck the operator’s notice before booking an inn around a direct arrival.

Flying into Sendai? Keep the last mountain bus in view

From Sendai Airport, first travel into Sendai or connect to the JR route that suits your flight time, then continue to Yamagata. The airport itself does not make the Yamagata mountain leg later or more frequent. If your flight lands in the afternoon, compare its realistic arrival time with the last Yamagata–Zao bus. An overnight in Yamagata is often the calmer choice when the connection is close; it also leaves daylight for the ropeway or an outdoor bath the next day.

For a Sendai day trip, keep the plan to one main activity in Zao—perhaps the ropeway or a single bath—rather than trying to fit in several baths and a long mountain visit. The Zao day-use onsen guide compares what each facility offers and how far it is from the terminal. Visitors planning around snow should also check the Zao ropeway weather backup guide before choosing the day’s main activity.

The short version

For most dates, take a highway bus or JR train from Sendai to Yamagata, then change to the Yamagata Kotsu bus for Zao Onsen. Use the direct Sendai coach only when a newly published winter timetable covers your dates and you have a confirmed seat. If a bus says Togatta or Zao Town, it is the Miyagi destination—not Yamagata’s Zao Onsen.
