Zao Onsen from Yamagata Station Without a Car: Day-Trip Plans

A no-car day trip from Yamagata Station works best when you plan around the return bus. The regular route to Zao Onsen Bus Terminal takes about 37–40 minutes; adult fare is ¥1,200 one way.

The central baths are in the village. The main Zao Ropeway station is about a 15-minute uphill walk from the terminal. On scheduled Z91 runs through October 25, 2026, the bus continues to the ropeway area; ordinary Z90 buses do not.

Lock the return before choosing a bath

The bus is a seat-capacity service, not a reserved-seat route. Yamagata Kotsu says full buses cannot take additional passengers, so arrive at the stop early on weekends and busy winter dates. The weekday timetable currently lists buses from Yamagata Station at 8:40, 9:20 and 12:20, reaching the onsen terminal at about 9:17, 9:57 and 12:57. These are examples from the current schedule, not a promise that every date runs the same timetable.

For the return, weekday departures from Zao Onsen include 17:20, 18:40 and 19:50. The last bus is scheduled to reach Yamagata Station at 8:27 p.m. If you miss it, there is no later regular service shown on the current timetable; that can mean an unplanned taxi or an overnight in Zao. Aiming for the 17:20 or 18:40 departure leaves more room for a delayed ropeway or a full bus.

Buy the local bus ticket at the Yamagata Station bus information counter and join the queue at stop 1. Yamagata Kotsu recommends lining up around 20 minutes before departure on busy days. If you need a later intercity train from Yamagata, keep a transfer margin instead of planning around the 19:50 bus.

Z90 and Z91 do not make the same stops

The route page lists both bus patterns together, which is where many day-trip plans go wrong. Z90 ends at Zao Onsen Bus Terminal. The stop names for the Chuo Ropeway and Zao Ropeway may appear farther down the shared list, but an ordinary Z90 bus does not continue there.

Z91 is the seasonal Katta Summit route. In 2026 it runs on weekends and public holidays from April 25 through July 31, then daily from August 1 through October 25. On a Z91 departure, the bus continues beyond the terminal to the ropeway stops and Katta Summit.

The schedule lists a weekday Z91 departure at 9:30 a.m. Check the route code and operating date on the current timetable. From October 26 onward, the village terminal is the regular endpoint unless a new seasonal timetable says otherwise.

If your bus ends at the terminal, budget about 15 minutes on foot to the Zao Ropeway’s Sanroku Station, plus extra time for snow, ice, tickets and queues. A full day works best with one mountain activity

The 8:40 bus gives the most room. After arriving around 9:17, continue to the Zao Ropeway if the line is operating and visibility is good. The summit is a weather-dependent outing; check the operator’s live status before leaving Yamagata, then check again at the base. A long queue or wind suspension is a reason to switch to the village, not to spend the afternoon waiting without a backup.

Leave the afternoon for one bath and a meal. The three communal bathhouses—Kamiyu, Shimoyu and Kawarayu—are open year-round from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The large Dai-Rotenburo is a different, seasonal choice: it is about a 20-minute walk from the terminal, has no showers or soap, and normally closes for winter from late November into late April. It is a poor late-afternoon add-on if you have already spent the morning at the summit.

A half-day plan: one activity, then the 5:20 bus

The 12:20 departure reaches Zao Onsen around 12:57. If the Z91 seasonal run matches your day, it can shorten the walk to the ropeway; otherwise, walk from the terminal and keep the summit visit within the line’s last uphill time. The ropeway operator lists 4:00 p.m. as the final uphill departure to Jizo Summit on its current operating page. Do not treat that as a target arrival time: allow for the approach, ticket queue and the ride between lines.

The 17:20 bus is a reasonable return after a short ropeway visit, but it does not leave room for several baths. If the weather closes the ropeway, spend the afternoon in the village and choose one bath. The ropeway weather-backup guide has alternatives for a visibility or wind problem.

If bathing is the only reason for the trip, skip the mountain walk entirely. The communal baths sit in the village, and the bus terminal is close to the central streets. Passes are seasonal, and the savings may be small

Yamagata Kotsu sells the 2026 bus-and-ropeway package through November 3, 2026. Adult Plan B includes the return bus and ropeway to Jizo Summit. Buy it at the Yamagata Station bus information counter; it is not sold on the bus.

There is also a weather trade-off: if you buy the package and the ropeway later stops for weather, the bus portion is not refunded, and the ticket cannot be exchanged for the other ropeway plan. If the forecast is unsettled or you might only visit the lower station, individual tickets keep the day more flexible. Check the current package terms before buying, especially after November 3 when this seasonal offer ends.

Luggage and overnight plans

If you are checking out of a Yamagata hotel and travelling onward after Zao, leave large luggage in the city rather than carrying it up the hill. If Zao is your overnight base, send or store your bags at the inn before walking to the ropeway.
