Main house: a straightforward room, shared facilities
The main-house rooms are about eight tatami mats and sleep around four people. They have a view toward the surrounding mountains, but the principal room category uses shared toilets and bathing facilities. This is a reasonable choice if a public bath is part of your plan anyway and you are comfortable leaving the room for the bathroom.
That trade-off is less appealing for someone who gets up often at night, travels with a small child, or simply wants a private toilet. Confirm the exact bathroom setup on the room listing; a larger group room does not automatically mean an en-suite bath.
Annex: three rooms with their own open-air bath
The three annex rooms add a private outdoor tub and private room facilities. This gives you a way to soak without waiting for a public bath, and makes a late-night or early-morning bath easier to fit around your own schedule. Room capacity and layout vary, so check the named room if you need space for four.
The inn also serves seasonal kaiseki using local ingredients, including game and vegetables from the surrounding area. Dinner has a set start time; ask which seating applies to your selected plan before building a late afternoon around sightseeing. Yamanami is about five minutes by car from Yufuin IC. If you are arriving without a car, check transport and room location in advance rather than assuming the annex is next to the main building.
