Hoteiya or Gettouan? A Walkable Ryokan or a Forest Cottage

These inns are both associated with private bathing, but their locations and room rules make for different evenings. Hoteiya keeps the town within walking distance. Gettouan spreads 18 detached cottages across a wooded property, further from the busy centre.
Hoteiya gives you choices; Gettouan removes one decision
Hoteiya has 13 named rooms, and the bath setup varies. Many cottages have an open-air bath; some include an indoor tub as well, while the Lavender and Kokonoe rooms do not list an in-room bath. All guests can also use two private-use baths at no extra charge. They are first-come when vacant, with 40-minute sessions.
At Gettouan, every one of its 18 detached rooms has a private open-air bath. The bath is part of the room you book, not an upgrade limited to a few categories. The inn also has public baths; the annex adds its own private-use outdoor bath for annex guests. If you want to avoid the shared-bath queue altogether, this is the simpler room rule.
The trade-off is price and choice. Hoteiya can suit a couple who is happy to use a shared bath and wants to compare lower room categories. Gettouan makes sense when a private open-air bath at any hour is central to the stay, and you are comfortable paying for a detached cottage.
Location decides how much time you spend at the inn
Hoteiya lists Yunotsubo Street about five minutes away and Lake Kinrinko about eight minutes away on foot. The station is roughly a 21-minute walk, and the inn offers a free pickup; check the current arrangements before arrival. It is an easier base for a walk into town or an early lakeside visit.
Gettouan is outside the main walking district, in a wooded setting. Its station shuttle is currently suspended according to the inn’s published travel notice; check for a newer update before booking transport. Without a car or confirmed transfer, do not treat it as a quick walk from the station. Once you arrive, the property is designed for time on the grounds and in the cottage rather than repeated trips back to the shops.
A wet or cold evening can change the calculation
Hoteiya’s indoor private-use bath is the practical backup when the weather turns, though a session is still limited to 40 minutes. Gettouan’s room bath is open-air, so guests who dislike cold-weather outdoor bathing should check the exact cottage setup and think about whether the public indoor bath will be enough. Private does not automatically mean sheltered.
