A Day in Shuzenji: Walk the Town, Then Soak at Hakoyu

Plan a car-free Shuzenji visit around the temple, Katsura River, bamboo path and Hakoyu. Check last entry and bus times for a half- or full-day route.

For a first visit, keep the route local: arrive at Shuzenji Station, take the bus into the hot-spring district, walk Shuzenji Temple and the Katsura River, follow the bamboo path, then finish at Hakoyu. From Mishima, the train ride to Shuzenji takes about 33 minutes; the bus to the onsen district takes about seven. Build in the wait between them and sort out luggage before you start walking.

Half-day route without a car

Arrive in the late morning and leave your bag at your accommodation or a suitable locker. Walk around the temple and riverfront first, with lunch nearby. Take the bamboo path at a slower pace rather than treating it as another timed stop.

Hakoyu fits after the walk. Adult admission is ¥700; it is open 10 a.m.–9 p.m., with last entry at 8:30 p.m. Allow about an hour for bathing, changing and getting ready to leave. You may spend less or more time in the bath, but avoid arriving just before last entry.

The bath has an indoor pool and basic washing products. Towels are sold separately. After bathing, the free Gyokurokaku viewing tower beside Hakoyu is an easy extra before returning to the bus stop. Hakoyu has no dedicated parking lot, so public transport is the simpler option for this particular loop.

If you have a full day

TimePlan
MorningTransfer from Mishima, leave luggage and visit Shuzenji Temple
Around middayWalk beside the Katsura River and have lunch
Early afternoonTake the bamboo path and allow time to pause or browse local shops
Later afternoonUse Hakoyu, then visit Gyokurokaku
Before departureCollect bags and return to the bus stop with a timetable buffer

This order is a framework, not a promise that every shop or facility will be open at those times. If you arrive after lunch, drop one sightseeing leg rather than squeezing the bath into the 8:30 p.m. last-entry window. The bus back to the station can be less frequent than a city service; check the actual departure you need before setting out.

Rain changes the walking experience: shorten the outdoor loop and leave time for a meal or rest indoors. With children or older companions, choose only two or three stops and avoid a long walk after bathing. A visitor who does not want to bathe can spend the same hour at the viewing tower or a nearby café, then meet at an agreed point.

If you would like a private bath or more than one bathing session, Hakoyu cannot replace an overnight stay. Compare the Shuzenji ryokan bath options before deciding. For lodging and luggage logistics, see the access and stay guide.
