Getting to Shuzenji Onsen—and Picking a Base That Works

From Mishima, reach Shuzenji Station in about 33 minutes, then take a bus to the hot-spring district. Choose a base by luggage, dinner and town access.

Shuzenji Station, the hot-spring district, your ryokan and Hakoyu are separate stops. Plan the bus transfer and luggage drop before adding sightseeing; the train ride alone does not get you to town.

Build the transfer before you add sightseeing

From Mishima, the Izu Hakone Railway takes about 33 minutes to Shuzenji Station. From there, the local bus to Shuzenji Onsen takes about seven minutes. Add the wait for the bus, luggage handling and the walk from the stop to your inn; the two ride times are not the door-to-door journey. Check the current Tokai Bus timetable and fare on your travel date.

With a large suitcase, ask your inn about early bag drop before relying on station or town lockers; availability and locker size are not guaranteed. Leaving your luggage first makes the riverside and bamboo grove easier to fit in before check-in.

Where you stayWhat it makes easierWhat to check
In the hot-spring districtWalking to Shuzenji Temple, the Katsura River, the bamboo path and HakoyuThe distance from your specific bus stop, luggage storage and dinner time
Near a bus stop or with a pickup arrangementMoving bags between the station, inn and townPickup hours, exact meeting point and whether you need to reserve
In a quieter hillside locationSpending more time at the inn and stepping away from the town centreThe evening return route, slopes, rain exposure and next-morning transfer

Yuyado Kikuya suits guests who want to settle beside the river, with its baths and historic corridors on site. Yagyu-no-Sho offers a quieter garden setting farther into the area, while Katsuragawa is one to compare for a family stay in the hot-spring district. Confirm pickup, parking and luggage storage with each property; these arrangements differ by inn.

A low-stress arrival sequence

For an afternoon arrival, transfer into town and leave your bags before walking to Shuzenji Temple, the river and the bamboo path. Hakoyu is a small public bath in the district, not part of the station complex. It is listed as open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with last entry at 8:30 p.m.

If you want to bathe before dinner, leave enough time to change and return to your inn. For a late arrival, use the ryokan bath rather than relying on a rushed last entry.

On departure day, ask whether the inn can store bags after checkout. If you plan to visit Hakoyu or have lunch before leaving, count the walk back to the bus stop and allow room for a missed or delayed connection. A car does not remove all of this friction: confirm where the parking space is and whether you can leave the vehicle there after checkout.

Spring and autumn invite longer walks, but weekends can add crowd and bus delays. In summer, do the outdoor loop earlier or later in the day. Winter daylight is shorter, so use Hakoyu during the day and keep dinner-to-inn travel simple. For a step-by-step stay plan, see the Shuzenji one-night itinerary; for a short visit, use the day-trip route.
