Day-Use Onsen in Kawagoe: KASHIBA, Chiisana Tabi or Hatsukari?
Choose KASHIBA for a longer lounge and bedrock-bath visit, Chiisana Tabi for a spring-focused soak, or Hatsukari for early or late hours.
Kawagoe’s old town is an easy day out, but its three main natural-spring bathhouses sit beyond the historic center. The choice is less about which one is “best” and more about how much time you have after sightseeing. KASHIBA makes sense when the bath is a half-day plan; Chiisana Tabi keeps the focus on bathing; Hatsukari is useful when your schedule starts early or runs late.
Choose by the shape of your afternoon
| Your plan | A good first look | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You have three or more hours and want somewhere to rest between soaks | Koedo Onsen KASHIBA | Its bedrock-bath rooms, restaurant and lounge make a longer stay practical. |
| You mainly want a natural hot-spring bath and sauna | Chiisana Tabi Kawagoe Onsen | The bathing areas include a source-water bath and a rotating pair of “Wood” and “Stone” zones. |
| You need an early start or a late finish | Koedo Hatsukari Onsen | It opens at 8 a.m. and accepts bathers until 12:30 a.m., subject to the last-entry cutoff. |
| Bathhouse | Adult admission | Useful timing or extra |
|---|---|---|
| Koedo Onsen KASHIBA | ¥900 weekdays; ¥1,000 weekends and holidays | Bedrock-bath package: ¥1,000 weekdays or ¥1,300 weekends and holidays, including clothing and towel. Baths run 10 a.m.–midnight; last entry is 11 p.m. |
| Chiisana Tabi Kawagoe Onsen | ¥850 weekdays; ¥950 weekends and holidays | Natural spring, source-water and carbonated baths, plus saunas. “Wood” and “Stone” zones switch between men and women daily. |
| Koedo Hatsukari Onsen | ¥900 weekdays; ¥1,000 weekends and holidays | Morning or night entry: ¥800 weekdays or ¥900 weekends and holidays. Baths run 8 a.m.–1 a.m.; last reception is 12:30 a.m. |
Seasonal pricing may apply at KASHIBA during holiday periods. Hatsukari’s separate bedrock-bath area closes before the baths.

A natural spring does not tell you how every bath is run
All three facilities identify a natural hot spring, but the public details are not equally complete. Hatsukari publishes a source temperature of 37.8°C and identifies its spring as a sodium-chloride hot spring. KASHIBA describes its spring baths and lists the well depth, but the main visitor pages do not provide a full treatment breakdown for every pool. Chiisana Tabi identifies a source-water bath, while details can vary between the two bathing zones.
| Facility | Published spring details | What the figures describe |
|---|---|---|
| Koedo Onsen KASHIBA | Sodium-chloride spring, pH 7.7; well about 1,500 m deep | The main visitor pages do not list treatment for every pool. |
| Chiisana Tabi Kawagoe Onsen | Named source; one bath is described as using unheated source water | This description does not cover every pool or confirm its treatment. |
| Koedo Hatsukari Onsen | Sodium-chloride spring; source temperature 37.8°C | Source temperature, not the bathing-pool temperature. |
Two practical limits before you go
None is a short walk from Kawagoe’s old-town sights. KASHIBA runs a free, non-reservable shuttle from Kawagoe and Hon-Kawagoe stations; it can fill up, and city events may disrupt service. Chiisana Tabi is served by Seibu Bus, with a stop near the facility.
For Hatsukari, take a bus from Kamifukuoka or Minami-Furuya Station, then walk about 15 minutes from the listed stop. See the car-free Kawagoe onsen access guide for route details and return options.
All three currently prohibit guests with tattoos. Chiisana Tabi does not admit children under three to the baths. At KASHIBA, children who are not toilet-trained are limited to the shower and children’s bath; confirm pool access for younger children. Kawagoe Yuyu Land is not included because this comparison covers facilities identified as using natural spring water.
If you have narrowed the choice to the first two, the KASHIBA vs Chiisana Tabi comparison focuses on the spring and bedrock-bath trade-off. For an early or late soak, see the Kawagoe morning and late-night bath guide.
