Geto Onsen Day Trip: Motoyu Geto or Geto Onsen Kanko Hotel?
Compare Geto Onsen’s two day-use baths, seasonal road access and current outdoor-bath closure before choosing a car or taxi trip.

There are two places called Geto Onsen in Kitakami that are easy to confuse. Geto Onsen is the remote valley at the end of Prefectural Route 122, where Motoyu Geto and Geto Onsen Kanko Hotel sit near one another. Geto Kogen Onsen Usagimori no Yu is at the ski resort, on a different road and with a separate bathing setup. A winter opening at the resort does not mean the valley road is open.
For a day trip to the valley, the choice comes down to the kind of bath you want—and how much uncertainty you are comfortable with at the hotel.

Motoyu Geto is the fuller bathing circuit
Motoyu lists both a face towel and bath-towel rental at ¥330 each. Bring your own towels if you prefer not to buy or rent them there.
Lunch is served from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. If you arrive later, bring a snack or eat in Kitakami before heading into the valley.
Motoyu has seven pools: five outdoor and two indoor. The outdoor baths are fed at the pool rather than adjusted to one standard temperature.

This is a place where each outdoor bath has its own rules and timing. Check the current bath map before you go, especially if a women-only period or one particular pool is important. Motoyu prohibits photography in bathing and changing areas, and asks visitors not to drink alcohol before bathing or occupy the small pools for long stretches. Oyu’s hotter water can be a poor match for anyone who does not tolerate high temperatures; the cooler pools give you alternatives.
Kanko Hotel: a simpler indoor soak, with an important current caveat
NEXCO East Japan’s 2026 campaign lists day-use bathing at Geto Onsen Kanko Hotel under these terms:

The hotel’s current official site describes two large indoor baths: Shirozaru no Yu (sodium-calcium sulfate spring) and Hebi no Yu (sodium-calcium chloride spring). It says the outdoor baths are closed. The indoor baths switch gender designations at 9 p.m. for overnight guests.
The 2026 NEXCO campaign is the available day-use listing, while the hotel site mainly explains overnight bathing. Confirm that day visitors are being accepted on your date before driving up.
The Kitakami tourism association has also advertised a special day-trip tour to the hotel for October 24, 2026. That is a separately organised package with transport and lunch, not a regular bus service or proof of walk-in availability on other dates.
Getting there is the hard part without a car
Neither property is a casual stop from Kitakami Station. The Kanko Hotel says it does not operate a shuttle and recommends a rental car or taxi. Motoyu’s station shuttle is for overnight guests arriving or leaving, requires advance booking at least three days ahead, and is tied to a stay plan with an additional ¥1,100 charge (about HK$54 / NT$222); day visitors cannot use it as a public transfer.
The final five kilometres are paved but narrow and winding. Drivers should leave enough time to arrive before last entry and descend before dark. At the “Geto Onsen / Kurikoma Quasi-National Park” sign, the Kanko Hotel’s access page directs drivers across the bridge on the left; the building is just beyond it.
A taxi avoids the mountain drive, but arrange the return in advance; do not expect a car to be waiting at the inn. Neither property lists a regular visitor shuttle.
For most visitors without a car, a standalone day trip is difficult to justify unless a taxi round trip or a confirmed organised excursion is already arranged. Geto Kogen’s Usagimori bath is a separate option closer to the ski resort, not a backup stop on the road to Motoyu.
Season and road closure can override the bath schedule
The valley is seasonal. The road section from Geto Kogen-wakare to Geto Onsen—about 5.8 km—closes over winter, taking the valley inns out of operation with it. The previous closure began on November 11, 2025, and the road reopened on May 1, 2026. The next winter closure date had not been announced as of September 27, 2026, so late-autumn plans need a fresh road notice as well as a bath-hours check.
For a first visit, Motoyu is the stronger choice if you want the distinctive outdoor pools and are comfortable with the etiquette and temperature range. Choose the hotel only when indoor baths suit you better and the property has confirmed day-use admission and the baths available on your date. For either one, transport and the road calendar matter more than the ¥100 (about HK$5 / NT$20) difference in adult admission.
