Hakkoda Onsen Without a Car: A Bus-Based Day Trip from Aomori
Plan a Hakkoda onsen trip from Aomori by seasonal bus. Compare Sukayu, Yachi and Tsuta connections, then check exact operating dates and the last return.
You can visit Hakkoda without driving, but it is not a hop-on, hop-off hot-spring circuit. JR Bus Tohoku’s Mizuumi service runs between Aomori, the mountain baths, Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada in season; selected winter buses instead serve the Aomori–Hakkoda area. The long gaps between departures make the return bus more important than the order of the baths.
The autumn timetable is dated September 18–November 17, 2026. The extra 7:30 a.m. Mizuumi 102 runs only through November 11; the 8:10 and 9:00 a.m. services remain on the timetable through November 17.

Check the operating dates for the exact service rather than relying on the timetable’s overall season heading.
The least complicated plan: Sukayu, then the ropeway
The 8:10 a.m. Mizuumi 2 from Aomori reaches Sukayu at 9:15. The northbound service leaves at 10:46 and reaches the ropeway station at 10:56.

This leaves the rest of the day for the ropeway and mountain area rather than trying to squeeze another bath into a timetable that does not line up neatly.
The bath stop is short—about 90 minutes before you need to be back at the bus stop—so this works best if Sukayu is your main bathing goal. If the ropeway is closed because of weather, you can stay longer at Sukayu and use a later northbound bus, but check the live ropeway and bus notices before deciding.

A slower two-bath option: Yachi and Tsuta
If the springs matter more than mountain sightseeing, use the 9 a.m. service to Yachi and continue south to Tsuta. Both baths have early last-entry times, so this is a shorter second soak rather than a leisurely afternoon.

That connection only works on dates when the relevant services and baths run. The 8:10 and 9:00 Mizuumi departures are listed through November 17, but Yachi closes Tuesday through Thursday from November 1 through April 30. Tsuta also changes access to its Kyu-an-no-yu bath by gender and time of day; check its current rules before relying on that specific bath. If you want a relaxed visit to both inns, stay overnight nearby or choose only one.
Yachi closes Tuesday through Thursday from November 1 through April 30, and its operator may announce additional closures. The autumn Mizuumi services to the mountain baths end in mid-November. Do not assume this two-stop itinerary operates in winter.
What changes in winter
From November 12, 2026, the winter route is the Hakkoda bus, not the Mizuumi service. It runs from Aomori toward the ropeway area, Jogakura and Sukayu, without continuing south to Yachi, Tsuta or Oirase.

Northbound service from Sukayu is listed at 10:55 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:50 p.m. A later arrival gives you more time at the bath, but check the exact schedule and facility hours for your date.
The road between Sukayu and Yachi on Route 103 closes seasonally, usually from mid-November into early April. Other sections have night restrictions, and emergency controls may be added. Winter bus service to Sukayu does not mean the mountain road is open for a through-drive or that every bath is operating each day.
A few details that save a missed connection
- Check the date-specific timetable and final return; routes and service days vary.
- Reserve winter Hakkoda bus departures from Aomori or Shin-Aomori.
- A stop does not confirm the nearby inn is open. Sarukura Onsen has announced a 2026 work closure.
- Snow can make walks between mountain facilities impractical; carry a small day bag.
- There is no onboard toilet. Comfort breaks are scheduled.
