Kawaguchiya Riverside vs Shinzan: Which Kinosaki Ryokan Fits Your Stay?

Kawaguchiya keeps the town within easy reach

Kawaguchiya sits at the entrance to the hot-spring district, close to Jizo-yu and the station-side end of town. Its two indoor baths use Kinosaki spring water and each has a dry sauna; the published bath hours are 3 p.m. to midnight, then 5 to 9 a.m. Sauna hours run from 3 p.m. to midnight. That morning window is useful if you want a soak before checkout, but there is no morning sauna.

The hotel also runs an outbound shuttle to the public baths. Its current schedule lists departures from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. every half-hour, then at 8, 8:30 and 9 p.m.; the hotel notes that times change by season. Treat it as a lift into town, not a guaranteed return service. Walking back lets you stop for a bath or a short stroll, while the shuttle is helpful for the outward leg if you would rather save your energy.

Kawaguchiya has two private open-air baths with views over the river and surrounding hills. Its public description does not say whether they use natural spring water. The same is true of the open-air tubs in guest rooms, so confirm the exact room and bath if spring water is essential.

Shinzan makes the inn itself part of the bathing plan

Shinzan has four named bathing areas: Mio-no-yu, a large bath; Kiri-no-yu, a garden bath; Shizuku-no-yu, a hinoki bath; and Tsuyu-no-yu, an outdoor bath. The inn identifies the water as Kinosaki spring water. Its bath page lists one indoor and one outdoor bath for each gender, with men’s and women’s sides changing between morning and evening. If you want to see the different spaces, check the day’s arrangement instead of assuming all four will be available to you in one visit.

Shinzan is about 25 minutes on foot from Kinosaki Onsen Station. The Kinosaki Ryokan Service Center runs a free check-in shuttle for arriving limited-express trains between 12:30 and 6 p.m.; no reservation is required. It can take luggage off your hands for an afternoon arrival, but it is not an all-day station shuttle.

The latest renovation update changes how to read the older construction warning. Shinzan reopened on July 3 while some work continued, and its June notice warned that work noise was possible. On September 22, the inn announced that renovation work had finished and new room types had opened. That later notice is the current status; guests choosing one of the new rooms should still check the room-specific details and occupancy before booking. Public-bath access is included, but closures change the location advantage

Both inns provide guests with the Kinosaki public-bath pass, known as Yumepa. Kawaguchiya supplies a digital pass with the room key; Shinzan’s current FAQ says its pass is valid from 2 p.m. on check-in day until 1 p.m. on checkout day. The pass does not cover a bath that is closed. Satono-yu, beside the station, has been closed for renovations since April 1, 2024, with no reopening date announced. Kono-yu, about a five-minute walk from Shinzan, is closed from May 11 through October 30, 2026, and is scheduled to reopen on October 31.

During the Kono-yu closure, Kawaguchiya’s nearby Jizo-yu remains an option while Shinzan’s closest bathhouse is out of service. Five of the town’s seven public baths are currently operating, subject to their regular closing days.
