Yufuin Ryokan with Private Baths for Rainy or Cold Days

Compare Yufuin rooms with indoor, roofed or open-air onsen. Tanokura has a spring bath in every room; Hoteiya and Ubl offer them only in selected rooms.

Checked: September 27, 2026 When rain or cold is likely, “private open-air bath” is not enough information. Check whether the tub is roofed, whether the room has an indoor alternative, and how far you must walk from your room. Those details matter more than the broad label on a booking page.

Hoteiya: a roof helps, but it is still an outdoor bath

Hoteiya’s Asagiri detached room has a roofed rock bath. That is useful in light rain, but wind and cold air still reach an outdoor tub. Other detached room categories have different setups; some include both indoor and outdoor baths. In the main building, the Lavender and Kokonoe rooms do not list a guest-room bath.

Staying guests can use two private-use baths—one indoors and one outdoors—without an extra charge when a bath is vacant. Each session is 40 minutes. The indoor option is the sensible backup if you want an open-air room bath only when the weather cooperates.

Tanokura: the simplest choice if you want to stay indoors

Every Tanokura room has an indoor hot-spring bath. Five rooms add a private outdoor tub. So you do not need to pay for an outdoor category just to bathe privately in spring water; the upgrade is about being outdoors, not about getting an in-room bath at all.

That distinction is especially useful in winter. If you want to avoid stepping outside between your room and the tub, the standard room already meets that need. If you want fresh air too, confirm that the exact room you book is one of the five with an outdoor bath.

Ubl and Souan Kosumosu suit opposite weather preferences

Ubl’s ten special rooms have a 24-hour indoor spring bath with a view. The bath is not open-air, and the other 23 Japanese rooms use the public baths. If warmth and privacy outrank outdoor scenery, the special-room category is the one to compare.

Souan Kosumosu’s detached villas go the other way: each has a private outdoor hot-spring bath available 24 hours. This is the better match if an outdoor soak is the point of the stay, but it offers less shelter than an indoor tub. The main-building room types have their own variations, so check the selected room rather than assuming all rooms have the same bath.

For a wider comparison of room-bath access, see the 24-hour in-room onsen guide and room upgrade guide. If you are deciding whether to stay overnight at all, the Yufuin day trip or overnight comparison covers that trade-off.

Check the room, the walk and the forecast-sensitive details

Before booking, confirm the exact room name and whether the bath is spring-fed, indoor, roofed or fully exposed. Also ask how far it is from the guest room, whether you need to cross an outdoor path, and whether the inn has a separate indoor bath you can use if weather turns.

The property’s public baths are useful backups, but access and opening hours vary. A room bath can remove the walk; it does not guarantee a particular water-handling method or a view. Check both the room description and the bath page.
