How to Get to Yufuin from Fukuoka, Beppu or Oita Airport

Compare the Fukuoka highway bus and Yufuin no Mori, Oita Airport’s direct coach, and date-dependent Beppu connections, with fares and station tips.

Start with the route that matches your entry point

From Fukuoka, the Yufuin-go highway bus is about ¥3,250 one way for an adult. From Oita Airport, the direct Y line is listed at ¥2,000 and about 55 minutes. JR fares for Yufuin no Mori and local or limited-express combinations from Beppu depend on the travel date. These prices do not include the final leg from Yufuin Station or the bus centre to your accommodation.

From Hakata, compare the reserved-seat bus with JR’s reserved-seat Yufuin no Mori. If you land at Fukuoka Airport International Terminal and are heading straight to Yufuin, the bus boards at the airport without first going into Hakata. From Oita Airport, check the direct Y service before planning a transfer through Oita Station. From Beppu, search the actual service for the day and the time you want to arrive; do not plan around an assumption of hourly trains.

Fukuoka to Yufuin: the bus and Yufuin no Mori offer different trips

The main options are the Yufuin-go highway bus and JR Kyushu’s Yufuin no Mori limited express. Both arrive in Yufuin’s central station area, but they suit different priorities.

Yufuin-go: board at Fukuoka Airport without going into the city

Nishitetsu lists Yufuin-go between Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal, Hakata Bus Terminal, Fukuoka Airport International Terminal and Yufuin Station Bus Center. The current schedule lists 14 round trips daily. Tenjin to Yufuin takes about 2 hours 25 minutes under standard conditions; the adult one-way fare from Fukuoka is ¥3,250 (about HK$163 or NT$661 at the September 8, 2026 reference exchange rates).

The airport stop is useful if you land at the international terminal and want to continue straight to Yufuin. There is no need to drag your luggage into Hakata Station first. Yufuin-go is a reserved-seat service, not a city bus: seats must be booked, and standing is not a fallback when it is full. Reservations open at 8 a.m. on the same calendar day one month before departure. Book ahead for weekends, public holidays and foliage season.

Road traffic can delay the trip. Leave a buffer before a ryokan dinner, private bath booking or onward connection rather than planning to arrive just in time.

Yufuin no Mori: choose the train when the ride is part of the trip

Yufuin no Mori runs from Hakata via Kurume, Hita, Amagase and Bungo-Mori to Yufuin; some services continue to Oita and Beppu. Example Hakata departures published for 2026 include 9:17 a.m., 10:11 a.m. and 2:38 p.m., but the timetable, operating days and trainset can change. Check the calendar for your travel date.

Every seat on Yufuin no Mori is reserved. A basic ticket alone does not let you take an unreserved seat. JR Kyushu says that if a Yufuin no Mori service is suspended for inspection or another reason, a Yufu limited express may run at the same or a similar time instead. Confirm operating information before you travel.

Choose the train if the scenery and onboard experience are part of the holiday. Choose the highway bus if you are landing at Fukuoka Airport with luggage and want to avoid going through Hakata first.

For a Yufuin day trip from Fukuoka, book the return as well

It is easy to focus on getting to Yufuin in the morning and only discover later that the preferred return is full. The highway bus requires a reserved seat, as does Yufuin no Mori. Confirm both legs before building the day around one of them.

Once you know the return time, plan backward from it. If you are leaving in the early evening, do not schedule a late-afternoon visit to a day-use bath far from the station. With an earlier departure, choose between Kinrin Lake and a soak rather than trying to squeeze every stop into a short visit. From Oita Airport: the direct bus avoids a transfer in Oita City

As of September 2026, Oita Airport’s Y line runs directly to the Yufuin Station area. The standard journey is about 55 minutes.

An adult one-way ticket costs ¥2,000 (about HK$101 or NT$407 at the September 8 reference rates). Oita Kotsu and Kamenoi Bus operate the service.

For travellers with bags, the useful part is avoiding an airport bus to Oita Station followed by another transfer onto the Kyudai Main Line. The airport bus departure may be adjusted to actual flight arrivals, and road traffic can affect the return journey to the airport. Do not choose a bus that leaves no margin before a flight. If the direct service does not fit your flight, then compare alternatives via Oita or Beppu; do not assume the larger city station will automatically make the transfer faster.

From Beppu: nearby does not mean frequent

Beppu and Yufuin are often combined in one Oita trip, but a short distance does not guarantee an easy departure at any time of day. Some current Yufuin no Mori services connect the two. For example, the published Yufuin no Mori No. 4 schedule leaves Beppu at 2:36 p.m., passes through Oita and continues from Yufuin at 3:56 p.m. toward Hakata. Other services run in the opposite direction, but these are limited rather than a frequent commuter service.

If you are checking out in Beppu in the morning and want to reach Yufuin before lunch, do not try to make an afternoon sightseeing train fit. Search JR Kyushu’s route finder for your date and arrival time, and check bus alternatives. Decide when you need to arrive first, then choose the service. For a one-night stay split between the two towns, compare Beppu and Yufuin as possible bases.

Two Yufuin Station changes older guides may miss

First, the station is operating from a temporary building. JR Kyushu closed the existing station building on March 26, 2026 and moved operations to the temporary station during repairs, which are expected to continue into winter 2026. Work may also affect the station forecourt. Allow a few extra minutes to find the exit, taxis or a meeting point if you are arriving for the first time.

Second, the platform footbath is closed. It has been unavailable since March 14, 2026, and the Art Hall is also closed during construction. Do not build a 2026 itinerary around soaking your feet at the station.

The JR ticket office currently lists hours of 7 a.m.–6 p.m. Online-reservation tickets may be collected from designated ticket machines at different times. Most importantly, JR Kyushu says SUGOCA is not accepted at Yufuin Station. Do not assume that an IC card habit from central Fukuoka will work for every Kyudai Line journey.

Deal with large bags before you start sightseeing

The tourist information centre beside Yufuin Station and the Yufuin Tourist Information Office provide lockers and oversized-bag storage. Some participating inns can also receive luggage through Yufuin Chikki delivery. This can be especially useful if your accommodation is near Kinrin Lake or out in the surrounding fields.

Do you need a rental car?

The central area—from Yufuin Station along Yufumi-dori to Yunotsubo Street and Kinrin Lake—is generally easiest to explore on foot. A car is more useful for linking outlying places such as Tsukahara, Kuju or suburban Beppu than for moving every few hundred metres around Yunotsubo.

On weekends and in peak season, parking and narrow roads in the centre can make driving slower than parking once and walking. If you are staying one night and keeping to the central sights, do not rent a car simply because Yufuin is a hot-spring town in the hills. Three common itineraries and the route that fits each

Land at Fukuoka Airport and stay a night in Yufuin: start with the direct Yufuin-go service from the international terminal. It avoids taking luggage through Hakata. If the bus schedule does not line up with your flight, compare the JR option.

Stay in Hakata, then Yufuin, then Beppu: Yufuin no Mori can be part of the journey, not just transport. Secure the reserved seat first and choose a departure that actually runs on your date. Stay overnight in Yufuin, then use the day’s JR or bus options to continue to Beppu.

Fly into Oita Airport, visit Yufuin, then head to Fukuoka: use the airport’s direct bus on the way in, then choose JR or the highway bus for the next leg. There is no need to use the same transport in both directions; mixing modes around your entry point and next stop is often simpler.

There is no universal winner between JR and the bus

For a direct trip from Fukuoka Airport, the highway bus is compelling. From central Hakata, Yufuin no Mori adds a scenic train ride. From Oita Airport, the direct coach saves a transfer. From Beppu, choose by the arrival time you need and the actual service that day.

The order that avoids the most common mishap is straightforward: secure the long-distance seat, sort out your large bags, then plan the day-use bath. That way a carefully timed sightseeing route does not end with no seat home.
