Yufuin Country Road Youth Hostel: A Budget Stay with a Real Onsen
Stay at this hillside Yufuin hostel for a natural onsen and shared-house feel. Private rooms still share baths, and the scheduled shuttle arrives at 5:15 p.m.

You can book a gender-separated dorm bed, a private bunk room or a private Japanese-style room, but the bathing facilities remain shared. The appeal is straightforward: a simple place to sleep, a natural hot spring and a shared lounge above the town. If you want an ensuite bathroom, a private soak with your partner or a quiet hotel-style stay, this is the wrong format.
The onsen is the headline, not a room upgrade
The hostel describes its bath as 100% free-flowing spring water at a source temperature above 90°C, with a bicarbonate spring classification. The facilities are two indoor baths, separated by gender. There is no outdoor bath or bookable private-use bath, and a private guest room does not turn the shared bath into a private one. Couples bathe separately.
Dorms and private rooms therefore differ in sleeping privacy, not bath access. The private Japanese room is aimed at couples and families who want their own room; the bath and toilets remain shared facilities. If bathing together is essential, compare the private-bath options around Yufuin instead.
The dining room doubles as the common lounge, with a view over the basin. The hostel describes evening conversations and group activities as part of its operation, so “quiet countryside location” does not mean a silent common area. Guests wanting an early night can choose a private room, but should still expect a sociable hostel atmosphere in shared spaces.
Plan the hill before you book
The walk from JR Yufuin Station takes around 40 minutes uphill; the descent back to town is listed at about 30 minutes. The slope is steep enough that the hostel itself flags it. Luggage, rain and a late arrival make this less like a casual town walk.
There is one scheduled free pickup from the station each day at 5:15 p.m., by reservation, meeting near the station’s 7-Eleven. The hostel says it is the only regular arrival shuttle. For other arrival times, a taxi takes about five minutes according to the hostel. The next morning, the hostel lists station drop-offs at 8:20 and 9:20 every day; a weekday bus also runs at 7:45, arriving at 7:52. Early departures outside those windows need another plan.
Yufuin Chikki’s baggage delivery is another possible aid, but delivery is limited to participating inns and its fees and cutoffs have changed. Check the current eligible-property list before relying on it. Driving is simpler: the hostel lists free car and covered bicycle parking.
Meals are home-style rather than a restaurant menu. Dinner centres on local vegetables and rice; breakfast is generally Japanese, with bread sometimes served when guest numbers are small. Check the meal plan and service for your date instead of assuming dinner is available after a late arrival.
