Shimoda Onsen on a Budget: Day Use, a Town Stay or Shirahama?

A town bath avoids a hotel bill; staying in Shirahama can save a separate coastal trip. Compare lodging, meals, transport and bath access—not room rate alone.

Ocean-view bath at Shimoda Prince Hotel

Shimoda works best when you budget by area. The station and port are in town; Shirahama, where Shimoda Prince Hotel sits, is a separate coastal stop. A room rate on its own will not tell you whether staying by the beach is worth the extra cost.

Three ways to spend the day

PlanWhat the known costs coverBest fit
Town day tripTrain or local transport, lunch and one town-side bath; facility charges and hours varyYou already have a place to stay and mainly want a soak
Town overnightRoom, meals and any bath charge, with the station and port closer at handYou want dinner options and an easier rail connection
Shirahama overnightRoom and meal plan, plus the hotel’s ocean-view bath and beach settingYou expect to spend time at the coast and use the hotel before or after dinner

Shimoda Prince Hotel’s 2026–27 day-use terms:

DetailCurrent listing
Admission¥1,500 adults; ¥1,000 children aged 11 and under
Hours2–6 p.m.; from 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays
Closed to day visitorsJuly 1–August 31, 2026; December 26, 2026–January 3, 2027

From Izukyu-Shimoda Station, the Tokai Bus takes about 15 minutes, costs ¥430 each way, then requires a five-minute walk. For two adults, admission plus return bus fares totals about ¥4,720 before lunch. The hotel’s day-use calendar determines whether this option is available on your date.

That subtotal is useful for a day visit, but it is not a fair comparison with an overnight stay. Room prices depend on the date, room and meal plan. Compare the same night and party size, then add dinner, breakfast, transport, parking or shuttle arrangements, and any bath charge that is not included.

A seven-part comparison, not a hotel rating

The source guide scores three trip styles across bathing comfort, pool variety, upkeep impression, scenery, quiet, access and overall experience value. These are editorial comparison scores, not guest reviews or measured water-quality results.

Trip styleBath comfortPool varietyUpkeep impressionSceneryQuietAccessExperience value
Town day use7.87.88.07.27.09.07.9
Town overnight8.17.88.07.57.29.08.2
Shirahama seaside overnight8.88.28.59.38.27.88.8

The Shirahama option scores well when you have time to use the room, dinner, bath and coast as one stay. A town base scores better for station access and flexible meals; day use keeps the room cost out of the budget, but leaves less slack around the return trip. Families should price room capacity and beach changing time, while older travellers may value a confirmed transfer more than a sea view.

What a coastal room buys you

At Shirahama, the hotel is the destination for the evening: the public bath looks out toward the Pacific, and the beach is close by. Staying there can make sense if you will use the room, bath and coast over several hours. It is harder to justify the extra room cost if your schedule keeps you in central Shimoda until late and you only want one bath.

A town-side stay puts restaurants, the port and rail connections nearer. It may be the simpler choice if you plan to spend most of the trip around Perry Road, Ryosenji Temple or the station. A town hotel’s bath and day-use terms are property-specific; do not count the Prince Hotel’s bath as part of a town stay.

For a no-car stay in Shirahama, reserve a hotel shuttle departure that matches your train. Otherwise, budget ¥430 each way for the route bus or about ¥2,600 for a taxi from the station.

Compare the same trip, not the lowest room rate

When checking accommodation, use the same date, number of guests, room occupancy, meal plan and cancellation terms. Then ask what the higher-priced option actually adds: a beachside location, the ocean-facing bath, dinner at the hotel, or an early start by the water. If those are central to the trip, the extra spend may replace transport and give you more time at the coast. If they are not, a town base leaves more of the budget for meals and other stops around Izu.

The seasonal day-use calendar matters too. The listed ¥1,500 admission is not available every day of the year. If your dates fall in a closure period, choose a town facility whose own visitor policy and hours fit, or consider staying overnight. The Shimoda City Tourism Association’s onsen page is a directory; check each facility directly for admission, opening hours and visitor acceptance.
