Shimoda Prince Hotel or a City Bath? Decide Whether the Coast Needs a Night
Decide between an ocean-view night at Shimoda Prince Hotel and a city-side day-use bath by comparing the time, setting, transport and what you actually get.
Shimoda Prince Hotel and the city’s day-use baths solve different itinerary problems. The Prince places you above Shirahama Beach, with an ocean-facing bathing window and a room to return to after sunset. A city bath fits more easily around Shimoda Port, Perry Road and the station. If your plan includes the beach at dusk or an early soak, staying in Shirahama adds something a day ticket cannot. If you want one bath between town stops, the city is usually the simpler base.
What the hotel stay adds
The hotel’s public day-use bath faces the Pacific through a wide picture window, but it is only open to day visitors during published seasonal periods. For 2026–27, the usual window is 2–6 p.m., or 3–6 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. It is closed July 1–August 31, 2026 and December 26, 2026–January 3, 2027.
The hotel currently lists day-use admission at ¥1,500 for adults and ¥1,000 for children aged 11 and under. Overnight guests have different bathing hours, including an early-morning window.
The room is the larger part of the comparison. A stay can give you time for the coast, dinner, an evening bath and the next morning without arranging a return trip from Shirahama. The hotel’s room price depends on date, occupancy and meal plan; no like-for-like rate is fixed here. Compare the same night and cancellation terms rather than treating the day-use fee as a proxy for the cost of staying.
What a city bath does better
City-side bathing keeps the port, historic streets and station within the same outing. The Shimoda Tourism Association lists several day-use facilities, but each has its own hours, fee, towel setup and visitor rules. Some are not walk-in options every day, and late-afternoon entry should be confirmed directly. The city day-use bath comparison is the better starting point if you have not chosen a facility yet.
This option makes sense when the bath is one stop, not the evening’s destination. You can spend the morning in town, have lunch, bathe in the afternoon and continue to your next hotel or train. It also leaves the lodging budget available for a different part of Izu. The trade-off is that a city bath does not give you the same Pacific outlook, hotel room, dinner or morning access.
Don’t compare only the seven scores
The original comparison scores the options across bathing comfort, pool variety, cleanliness impression, scenery, quiet, access and overall value. Those are editorial judgments, not facility ratings. The hotel stay scored highest for scenery (9.3), while the city day-use option led for access (9.0). That difference captures the main choice better than a single overall winner: the sea-facing hotel rewards time spent on site, and city baths reward a route that stays near town.

The simplest test is your arrival time. If you reach Shimoda around mid-afternoon and leave the next morning, staying in Shirahama can turn a transfer into a coastal night. If you arrive late or need the station, port and restaurants close by, a city base plus one confirmed bath is easier to execute. Before booking, answer four practical questions: will you use the beach or sunrise, do you want a bath after dinner or early in the morning, does the shuttle fit your train, and would a town restaurant be more useful than the hotel meal plan? Then verify the room’s bath setup, the public bath’s overnight hours, meal times and the exact day-use calendar. An ocean view does not mean the room has a private bath, and the day-visitor timetable is not the overnight schedule.
