Okuhida Without a Car: Four Ryokan with Private Baths

Okuhida is a chain of hot-spring villages along a mountain road, not one compact town. A ryokan can look close on the map and still involve a transfer, a bus that skips its village, or a walk with luggage. For a no-car stay where private bathing matters, compare the actual stop and pickup arrangement first. The bath becomes the second decision.

Start with the last kilometre

Nohi Bus runs from Takayama through Hirayu and onward toward Shinhotaka. The Shinhotaka line is roughly hourly, but the departures alternate between the Fukuji and Ichibōsui routes. A departure that skips Fukuji can change a one-minute walk into a 20-minute walk—or make an advance pickup necessary. Check the exact stop column on the current Nohi Bus timetable and the inn’s own access page before buying a ticket.

Hirayu: easiest if you want a transport hub and backup pickup

Miyama Ouan is in Hirayu, where the long-distance and local buses meet. The inn lists a walk of about seven minutes from the terminal. After 1:30 p.m., guests can call from the terminal for a pickup; it is not a pre-booked shuttle.

With luggage or in winter, allow time to call and wait for the vehicle. Do not plan on a driver already waiting outside.

The tourism association’s reference rates are ¥24,200 for a two-meal stay and ¥18,000 room-only. These indicate the property’s price level, not live platform quotes; compare the same date and meal plan.

The inn’s four private baths are free, unreserved and listed as available 24 hours during a stay: two are outdoor and two are indoors. A 2026 renovation updated the bathing areas, but they are still shared facilities, so check the on-site vacancy display. The pools are for soaking, not washing; use the public bath or your room first. The inn asks guests with tattoos not to use the shared public bath and directs them to its private baths or guest-room bath instead.

This is the most forgiving choice if your route reaches Hirayu and you prefer not to ride another bus deeper into the valley. It is less compelling if you want a room with its own outdoor bath; verify the room’s bath type rather than assuming every room includes one.

Shin-Hirayu: a short walk, but no pickup safety net

Ryokan Gizan is reached from the Shin-Hirayu Onsen stop. The official English site estimates a two- to three-minute walk and says the inn does not provide a shuttle. From Hirayu, continue on the Shinhotaka-bound bus and confirm that your chosen departure serves Shin-Hirayu; do not get off at the first stop with “Hirayu” in its name.

Gizan’s four outdoor private baths are free and do not require advance booking. The official English page lists access from 3 p.m. until 9 a.m. the following morning. Check the indicator at each entrance for availability. The private pools have no washing area, while the public bath has shampoo, conditioner and body soap. If you arrive before 3 p.m., your room may be ready before the private baths are open, so ask about current access at check-in.

For a party that is comfortable using a shared public bath to wash and then waiting for an open private outdoor bath, Gizan keeps the walk and bathing rules straightforward. If a private bath must be available immediately on arrival, an unreserved bath cannot guarantee that.

Fukuchi: confirm which bus route you are taking

Fukuchi Onsen is where route variants matter most. Some buses stop at Fukuchi Onsen (HO40); others bypass the village and stop at Fukuchionsenguchi (HO45). The two stops are not interchangeable, even though both appear on route information for this area.

At Hidaji, HO40 is about a one-minute walk away. From HO45, the inn estimates around 20 minutes on foot; pickup from that stop must be arranged in advance.

All 12 rooms have a private outdoor rock bath and an indoor cypress bath. Two riverside outdoor baths are also free and unreserved, open from 2 p.m. to 10 a.m. Check-in is 2–5 p.m., and children younger than 14 are not accepted. The age limit and check-in window rule it out for some family trips and late bus arrivals.

At Yumoto Choza, the Fukuchi Yurimizaka stop is directly in front of the entrance when your bus uses that route. Some services instead stop at Fukuchionsenguchi; call ahead to arrange pickup from there.

Choza has three free family baths with outdoor tubs, used when the status panel shows them vacant. It also lists five separate outdoor private baths along a path outside the main building. These are separate facilities, so check which baths are included with your stay and their current access terms.

Choza asks guests arriving after 5 p.m. to call. If you reach Fukuchi early, its FAQ points to the village’s rest house, Shayu, as a place to wait. This can be useful when the bus reaches the village before check-in, but it does not remove the need to match your arrival stop to the correct route.

Use the bus timetable to decide where to stay

For a late arrival, check the inn’s check-in and dinner cutoff before choosing the last bus. Hidaji accepts arrivals from 2 to 5 p.m.; Choza asks guests arriving after 5 p.m. to call. Private-bath hours do not extend reception or dinner service.

With large bags, favor a pickup or a stop at the door. Miyama Ouan can collect guests who call after reaching Hirayu, and Choza is beside the Fukuchi Yurimizaka stop on the service that calls there. In winter, the walk from Fukuchionsenguchi can be slow with luggage.

Bath hours matter if you arrive late. Gizan’s four private baths are listed as 24-hour use, Miyama Ouan’s four private baths are available late into the night, and Choza’s three family baths are open during the stay without reservations when vacant. Hidaji puts a private bath in every room. Check availability and washing facilities, not only whether the words “private bath” appear on the room page.

Which one fits your trip?

If you want to keep transfers simple, use Hirayu as your anchor and compare Miyama Ouan’s terminal walk with its call-on-arrival pickup. Gizan is a better fit when a short walk from the correct local stop matters more than having a shuttle. Choose Hidaji when an in-room private bath is the deciding feature and you can meet its age and check-in rules. Choza has the least walking when the bus stops at its front entrance, and a pre-arranged pickup is the fallback for the other stop.

Children under 12 are exempt under the current rule. Check whether the booking total already includes the tax.

For a first no-car trip, Miyama Ouan keeps the long-distance bus journey in Hirayu and offers a call-on-arrival pickup; Gizan is simpler if you prefer a short walk without arranging a shuttle. Choza has the shortest walk when the bus stops at Fukuchi Yurimizaka, while Hidaji is about a minute from HO40 but about 20 minutes from HO45 without its prearranged pickup. If you want to avoid shared bathing, Hidaji is the clearest fit because all 12 rooms have a private outdoor rock bath and indoor cypress bath. For tattoo rules, Miyama Ouan is the clearest: the shared bath is off-limits, while the inn points tattooed guests to private or guest-room baths.

The valley bus can be delayed by road conditions, and in late autumn or winter there may be snow and ice.
