Getting to Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada: Aomori, Hachinohe or Shichinohe-Towada?
Choose between Aomori, Hachinohe and Shichinohe-Towada for Oirase Gorge or Lake Towada, with the seasonal bus routes and onward travel each requires.
Choose your overnight base before choosing the station. The bus from Hachinohe reaches both Yakeyama, at the Oirase entrance, and Yasumiya on Lake Towada. Aomori’s route crosses Hakkoda on its way to the gorge and lake. Shichinohe-Towada is closest to central Towada by local bus, but you still need another leg to reach Oirase or the lake.

Hachinohe: simplest for a direct trip into the area
JR Bus Tohoku’s current autumn timetable runs through November 17, 2026. The Oirase-go leaves Hachinohe West Exit at 10:00 or 13:30, stopping at Yakeyama’s Oirase Keiryu Onsen area before continuing to Yasumiya. The 10:00 service is scheduled to reach the onsen stop at 11:32 and the lake at 12:20; the later bus arrives at 15:02 and 15:50 respectively.
If boarding at Hachinohe Station, reserve the 10:00 or 13:30 departure online. The rule is specific to those departures from the station; it does not mean every stop or direction on the route has the same reservation requirement. Seats can fill during foliage season, so leave this until after you have confirmed your travel date and lodging.
Aomori: the scenic route that also serves Hakkoda
The Mizuumi-go runs from Aomori through Hakkoda and Oirase to Lake Towada in the autumn operating period. That makes it a sensible choice if you are already staying in Aomori or want a route that includes the mountain hot springs. It is less direct if your sole goal is to reach a Yakeyama inn as quickly as possible.
The timetable adds a 7:30 departure from Aomori arriving at Yasumiya at 10:15, and a 14:30 return from the lake reaching Aomori at 17:14 and Shin-Aomori at 17:29. These extra trips run through November 11; use the bus operator’s timetable for your date rather than carrying the times into another season.
From November 18, 2026 through March 31, 2027, JR Bus lists its Aomori winter service to Sukayu in Hakkoda, not the autumn route through Oirase and Lake Towada. Do not build a winter transfer around the warm-season Mizuumi-go without checking for a separately announced service.
Shichinohe-Towada: useful for central Towada, not an automatic shortcut
The local bus from Shichinohe-Towada Station reaches central Towada. That can work if you plan to stay in town or have a confirmed onward connection. It does not provide the same direct access as the seasonal JR buses to Yakeyama and Yasumiya. Before choosing this station, use the current route planner to check the full journey to your actual hotel—not just the first bus leg.
A car helps, but the gorge still has rules
Driving gives you more control over where to stop, especially if you want to visit several points along the stream. Autumn traffic restrictions can temporarily close the gorge road to private vehicles and add a shuttle-bus leg. The 2026 restriction period was September 7–13 and has ended; check Eco Oirase for any future dates rather than assuming the same week or hours will apply next year.
