Tsubame Onsen Without a Car: Bus Times and a Half-Day Plan

Plan around the sparse Seki-Tsubame bus from Sekiyama Station; confirm your return, then walk to Sotaki viewpoint and seasonal Ogon-no-Yu.

The first decision for a car-free visit to Tsubame Onsen is not which bath to try. It is which bus gets you back down the mountain. Myoko City’s current Seki-Tsubame timetable is in effect through March 31, 2027, and has only a handful of departures. Save the PDF or screenshot it before you leave Sekiyama Station.

Start with the bus, then add the walk

One workable longer outing is the 9:03 bus from Sekiyama Station, arriving at Tsubame Onsen at 9:34, followed by the 14:34 return, which reaches Sekiyama at 15:08. A shorter morning pairing is the 7:46 departure, arriving at 8:09, with an 11:35 return from Tsubame Onsen. These are examples from the published 2026 timetable, not year-round departures; verify them against your exact date.

The open-air bath at Ogon-no-Yu is about a 10-minute walk from the Tsubame Onsen parking area. The Sotaki waterfall viewpoint is about 15 minutes on foot from the same parking area. Paths are exposed to mountain weather and can be slippery, muddy or snowy, so allow more time than a flat-town walk and wear shoes with grip.

A relaxed half-day outline

With the later return, leave room for the waterfall viewpoint first, then spend time in the village and visit Ogon-no-Yu during its daylight opening window. The bath is free and outdoors; it closes for snow, and Monday and Friday mornings are reserved for cleaning. Check its current status before you set off. If bathing is the main purpose, reverse the order so a trail delay does not put the bath visit at risk.

A few transport checks that save a long wait

  • Check both the outbound and return columns on the current Seki-Tsubame PDF; the bus is not frequent enough to improvise after arrival.
  • Leave a buffer for the walk back from the bath or viewpoint. The quoted walk times do not account for snow, rain or slower footing.
  • If travelling in late autumn or early spring, check for seasonal closures and road or trail notices.
  • Ask the operator or check the city page for service changes on your date. Myoko’s 2026 bus schedules are published through March 2027, while other sightseeing routes operate only in green season.
