Akakura Day-Use Onsen: Kougakuro or Akakura Wakui Hotel?

Compare Kougakuro’s outdoor bath and spring details with Wakui Hotel’s lower listed price, later closing and year-round day-use listing.

Akakura Onsen has several ryokan baths open to day visitors, but Kougakuro and Akakura Wakui Hotel suit different plans. One is unusually clear about how its spring water is handled and has outdoor baths; the other costs less and stays open later. Winter access is the deciding detail if you are visiting during ski season.

Kougakuro’s posted day-use terms are more restrictive. There is no regular day-bath service from December 20 through March 10, and its ordinary admission does not include a towel, yukata or a relaxation room. Credit cards are not accepted for the basic day visit. The hotel lists its baths as opening from 3 pm, with reception ending at 6:30 pm.

Wakui’s listed ¥600 adult admission is the cheaper option, and the 8 pm closing time leaves a little more room after a late-afternoon arrival. Its day-use page says outside bathing is available throughout the year, though it does not give a separate last-entry time. Because that page does not show a recent revision date, call ahead before making a long trip, especially on a busy winter day.

What the spring-water details actually tell you

Kougakuro gives a fairly specific account of its bath water: the source is described at about 52°C, and the inn says it does not add other water or reheat it. Its spring page also says the water is not filtered or circulated. The stated spring type is sulfate-bicarbonate, with a pH of 6.6.

Wakui draws from the same Akakura hot-spring system, but the temperatures on its page refer to different points along the route. It describes several sources at roughly 40–60°C, a collection basin at 51.1°C and water around 48°C at the bath inlet. The bathing pools are described at about 42°C, with seasonal variation; within each gender-separated bath, one pool is warmer and the other cooler.

Those figures are not a head-to-head temperature test. The source, collection basin, inlet and bathing pool are different places. Kougakuro’s published pH should not be assigned to Wakui, either. If you want the most detailed account of filtration and heating, Kougakuro is the clearer choice; if you prefer a choice of warmer and cooler pools, Wakui describes that setup more plainly.

Getting to the onsen district

Neither hotel is a short walk from Myoko-Kogen Station. Akakura Onsen is reached by local bus or taxi from the station. Wakui’s access page gives a rough guide of about 20 minutes by bus or 10 minutes by taxi, but winter bus stops may leave a walk to the hotel. Check the timetable for your travel date and work backward from the bath’s reception hours. A 7 or 8 pm bath closing time does not guarantee a bus back to the station afterward.

The hotels’ ordinary day-use pages do not give a clear tattoo policy. Ask each property directly rather than assuming the rules from another Myoko bath apply.

For a very different day-bath setup in Niigata, the Yakushi-no-yu guide covers Murasugi’s communal bath.
