Ogon-no-Yu or Kawara-no-Yu? Choosing a Tsubame Onsen Outdoor Bath
Compare two free Tsubame Onsen outdoor baths: Ogon-no-Yu is gender-separated, while Kawara-no-Yu is mixed and reached by a rougher path.
Both free outdoor baths use Tsubame’s milky spring water, but their bathing arrangements and approach walks differ. Ogon-no-Yu is gender-separated and about 10 minutes from the village parking area; Kawara-no-Yu is mixed bathing, around 15 minutes away along a rougher route with a temporary bridge. For one stop, choose based on which bathing setup and walk suit your group.

Both are seasonal rather than year-round facilities. Snow, trail conditions and maintenance can shift opening dates, so check the Myoko Tourism notice close to your visit.
Ogon-no-Yu suits a first visit
Ogon-no-Yu is the easier one to plan around: it is closer to the village, has separate bathing areas for men and women, and is a straightforward choice if you only have a short stop. The bath is free, with a donation box for maintenance. During the early 2026 opening, the route still had deep snow and the tourism office required boots; that was a spring condition, not a standing summer rule.
The standard window is sunrise to sunset. Cleaning closes the bath on Monday and Friday mornings. Bring shoes with a proper grip, and check for a temporary closure after heavy rain or before the first snow.
Kawara-no-Yu asks more of you
Kawara-no-Yu sits farther along the gorge path and is a mixed outdoor bath. A changing area does not make the bath gender-separated, so it is not the right choice if you want a private or single-gender soak.
The bridge route is still temporary. Myoko Tourism’s 2026 reopening notice recommends trainers or hiking shoes because the footing can be poor. Leave sandals and smooth-soled bath slippers in the car, and skip the walk if conditions are wet or you are unsure of your footing. The bath reopened for the 2026 season on June 30; older notices saying it remained closed refer to an earlier period.
If you have time for both
Visit only when both baths are confirmed open, the weather is steady and the cleaning window is over. A sensible order is Ogon-no-Yu first, then the longer walk to Kawara-no-Yu, leaving enough time to return before sunset. If anyone in your group is uncomfortable with mixed bathing, make Ogon-no-Yu the whole plan rather than treating the second bath as a must-do.
