Tomonoura Onsen Day Trip: A Simple Bath, a Ryokan Lunch or an Overnight Stay?
Compare Ofutei’s bath-only visit with Keishokan’s lunch-and-onsen package for groups of four or more; treat Ochikochi as an overnight stay.
Tomonoura’s day-use options are easy to confuse because three well-known inns sit around the same small port. They do not sell the same kind of visit. Hotel Ofutei has a published bath-only ticket, Keishokan’s public day-use offer is built around lunch, and Ochikochi is chiefly a stay with a private hot-spring bath in every room. Decide what you want to do in the port town before comparing the prices.
| Property | Published day-use offer | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel Ofutei | Bath only: ¥1,600 adult; ¥800 elementary-school child | A soak after walking around Tomonoura | The rooftop baths are for overnight guests; the third-floor outdoor bath is scheduled for renovation from 1 October 2026 |
| Keishokan Sazanami-tei | Lunch and bath: ¥6,600 per person | A planned meal and bath for at least four adults | Advance booking required; no guest room is included |
| Ochikochi | No dependable public bath-only walk-in schedule listed | A private-bath overnight stay | Do not assume a day-use search page means a bath-only visit is available |
Ofutei is the only clear bath-only ticket
| Ofutei day-use detail | Published terms |
|---|---|
| Bath access | Third-floor communal and outdoor baths |
| Hours | 11 a.m.–6 p.m.; last reception 5 p.m. |
| Adult admission | ¥1,600 |
| Elementary-school child | ¥800 |
| Preschool child | One free with each adult |
| Face towel | Free in the changing area |
| Bath-towel rental | ¥330 |
The hotel also has rooftop baths with sea views, but those are reserved for overnight guests. Do not book the ¥1,600 day visit expecting access to the rooftop. The published day-use ticket is for the regular communal bathing area, which includes the third-floor bath and sauna.
Ofutei plans to renovate its third-floor outdoor bath from October 1 through the end of December 2026. The indoor bath is scheduled to remain open; the third-floor outdoor bath will close. The rooftop outdoor bath is planned to operate but is for overnight guests. The whole property will also close from 11 a.m. on December 14 until 2 p.m. on December 17. Check the hotel’s notice before visiting during either period.
Keishokan makes sense when lunch is part of the plan
Keishokan’s published basic day-use plan costs ¥6,600 per person and combines lunch with hot-spring bathing. It requires at least four adults and does not include a guest room. Lunch is served from 11:30am to 2pm, and the bath is available from 11am to 2:30pm. The meal plan must be booked by 3pm three days before the visit.
That is a very different purchase from Ofutei’s bath ticket. It suits a family or group that already wants a Setouchi seafood lunch and can commit to a booking; it is poor value if you are travelling alone or only want a quick soak. Seasonal dishes may change, and the restaurant does not promise a particular seat.
Ochikochi is better planned as a stay
Ochikochi’s spa information describes three private open-air baths and guest rooms with their own hot-spring open-air baths. Its booking site also has a day-use search entry, but the current public information does not establish a stable bath-only walk-in price, hours or availability. That gap matters: a room product and a private bath for overnight guests are not evidence that a day visitor can simply arrive and pay for a soak.
If a private bath for two is the point of the trip, treat Ochikochi as an overnight option and confirm any day plan directly with the inn. For a same-day visit that does not depend on a special reservation, Ofutei is the clearer choice.
Getting to Tomonoura from Fukuyama
Tomonoura has no JR station. From Fukuyama Station, take the Tomo Line from the bus stop outside the station’s south exit, stop 5, towards Tomonoura or Tomokō. Tomotetsu lists the line and its current timetable on its official site. Traffic can stretch the road journey, so leave room for the bus ride rather than fitting a bath around a tightly timed train connection.
The inns’ courtesy transport should not be your default plan unless the property confirms that your exact day-use booking qualifies. A shuttle listed for hotel guests or meal groups does not automatically cover a bath-only visit. The public bus is the simplest baseline for a walk around town followed by Ofutei; if you have booked Keishokan’s lunch package, ask about transport as part of that reservation.
If your coastal onsen day is built around Miyajima instead of Fukuyama, compare it with the Miyahama day-bath guide. The access and day-use windows there are different, even though both trips pair a historic waterfront with a hot-spring bath.
