Hiroshima Scenic Open-Air Onsen: Four Baths Worth Planning Around

Compare Hiroshima’s open-air baths: Miyahama’s sea view, Yuki’s river valley, Kurahashi’s beach and Ujina’s city access. Check transport and hours.

For a rooftop bath looking across the Seto Inland Sea, start with Miyahama Grand Hotel—but check which outdoor bath is assigned to your bathing group that day. Yuki Lodge is the pick for a river-valley setting, though the bus back toward Itsukaichi leaves before the bath closes. Kurahashi Katsurahama Onsenkan pairs an outdoor spring bath with a beach-and-pine-grove setting, at the cost of a long ride from Kure. Honoyu Ujina is the practical city option: less of a far-reaching panorama, much easier to fit around a day in Hiroshima.

All four accept day visitors under their published arrangements. What changes the choice is whether the view belongs to the bath you can use, how much of your day the journey takes, and whether weather will make that particular landscape matter.

Miyahama Grand Hotel: the panorama depends on the day

The hotel’s rooftop open-air bath, Marumie Roten, is the clear choice if the view itself is the reason to go. Its official description points to an open sweep of sea and sky, with Miyajima and the water around Ono Seto in view. The other open-air bath, Nozokimi Roten, is rock-built and has a more enclosed feel; it is not the same rooftop panorama.

The two bath areas switch between men and women daily. A day-use ticket does not guarantee access to Marumie Roten: check the hotel’s date-specific notice for both the bathing window and that day’s assignment. The general reference is ¥800 for adults, with a usual 1 p.m.–8 p.m. day-use window, but the hotel may shorten hours or suspend day use when the property is busy or undergoing maintenance. Payment is cash only under its current notice.

Miyahama makes most sense when you are already near Miyajima, Miyajimaguchi or the western side of Hiroshima. JR’s Onoura Station is the nearest rail stop; the hotel describes a roughly five-minute drive and offers a free shuttle for certain guests and plans, but do not assume the shuttle is available to a walk-in day visitor. Confirm transport directly or arrange a taxi. For the current bathing product and access caveats, use the Miyahama Grand Hotel day-use guide.

Yuki Lodge: river scenery, with a timetable attached

Yuki Lodge’s outdoor bath faces the Minai River, with the surrounding woodland and valley close rather than spread out as a distant view. The setting is still legible on a cloudy day: the river and trees are part of the scene, not just a far-off horizon. The lodge says it uses its spring without adding water, while heating it for bathing.

Adults pay ¥750 for one visit. Day-use bathing runs 10 a.m.–9 p.m. from June through September, then 10 a.m.–8 p.m. from October through May; last entry is 30 minutes before closing. The bus from JR Itsukaichi Station takes about 75–76 minutes. The final return bus is listed at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and 6:40 p.m. on weekends and holidays, so the bus—not the bath’s closing time—sets your afternoon cutoff.

There is free parking for 120 cars, making this a simpler half-day outing by car.

The baths also alternate by date: the lodge lists a cypress bath and a marble bath, each with its own open-air section. If a specific bath layout matters, check the date and gender allocation before you travel. The Yuki Lodge onsen guide has more on the spring and facilities.

Kurahashi Katsurahama Onsenkan: a beach landscape, not a rooftop viewpoint

This public bath sits by Katsurahama, a white-sand beach backed by pines on Kurahashi Island. Its outdoor baths are in two alternating bath areas, and the facility identifies the outdoor “Golden Spring” as 100% Kurahashi Onsen source water. The surrounding coastal setting is the attraction; do not expect the elevated, far-reaching view offered by Miyahama.

Adult admission is ¥720. The current facility page lists opening hours of 10 a.m.–9 p.m., with last entry at 8 p.m.; it closes on Mondays, moving the closure to Tuesday when Monday is a public holiday. The first- and third-floor bathing areas alternate between men and women weekly, so check the current allocation if you have a preference.

From Kure Station, the Hiroden Kure-Kurahashijima bus runs to the Katsurahama/Onsenkan stop. The facility’s current access information estimates the ride at about 80 minutes; allow for the long round trip and check the operator’s timetable for your date. By car, the facility lists about 50 minutes from Kure and roughly 150 parking spaces. This is easiest to justify when Kurahashi itself is part of the day, not as a quick detour from Hiroshima city. The Kurahashi Onsen guide covers the wider island-side visit.

Honoyu Ujina: the convenient choice when scenery is secondary

Honoyu Ujina is a city bath rather than a destination for a sea or mountain panorama. Its outdoor area has seasonal garden elements, while the natural spring is used in the outdoor source-water and rock baths. The full “admission” ticket includes the outdoor baths, sauna and cold bath. A cheaper ¥500 bathing ticket does not include those areas, so it is not the right ticket if the natural-spring outdoor bath is your reason for going.

Choose Ujina when you have a short gap in the city and want an actual outdoor natural-spring bath without spending much of the day in transit. If you are weighing it against Honoyu Rakurakuen, the Ujina vs. Rakurakuen comparison looks at the practical differences.

How weather changes the view

Miyahama’s rooftop panorama is the most dependent on visibility. Low cloud, rain or haze can obscure the island-and-sea outlook; if the view is your only reason to go, check the forecast and the hotel’s same-day notice before setting out. The bath may still be open, but that is a different proposition from a clear-day panorama.

Yuki Lodge’s river and trees sit close to the bath, so the valley setting does not rely on a distant horizon. Kurahashi’s beach and pine grove likewise remain part of the immediate coastal environment, though wind and rain can make an exposed outdoor bath less appealing. At Ujina, weather matters less to the view because the appeal is the convenient urban bath, not a long-range landscape.

In any season, an outdoor bath can be restricted at short notice for safety or maintenance. Confirm access before making a long trip, particularly for the two facilities with less frequent transport or date-dependent day-use arrangements.
