Beppu Hotels with Open-Air Onsen: Public Views, Private Baths and Room Options

Compare Beppu’s high-floor public rotenburo, private cottage baths and sea-view room baths at AMANEK, Showaen and Umino Hotel Hajime.

Checked: September 27, 2026

“Open-air bath” can mean a gender-separated hotel bath, a private bath you share with your party, or a tub attached to your room. Those are very different booking benefits. In Beppu, AMANEK Beppu YULA-RE is strong for a high-floor public rotenburo; Beppu Showaen has private outdoor baths and selected cottages with their own; Umino Hotel Hajime pairs a public sea-view bath with room-specific half-open-air options.

If you are choosing by sea view rather than bath style, see the Beppu seaview onsen hotel comparison. For room privacy and shuttle access at Showaen, our luxury ryokan comparison has the details.

AMANEK Beppu YULA-RE: use the public rotenburo, upgrade only for privacy

The 14th-floor bath is the key distinction here. The public indoor bath is recirculated, while the open-air bath is described as free-flowing spring water. Both offer a high-level view over Beppu, and the public baths are open 6–10 am and 3 pm–midnight. A standard room is enough if you want the view and outdoor air; there is no need to book a suite just to use the public rotenburo.

For an in-room onsen, look at the Japanese Spa Suite. It comes in two versions, with a hinoki bath or a natural-stone bath, and both are semi-open-air and supplied with free-flowing water. The room’s bath has water added and heated as needed. It is a meaningful upgrade if you want to bathe privately or together, not simply a way to access natural water.

The rooftop infinity pool is separate: it is not an onsen, and swimwear is required. It may be useful to families or couples who want to share the rooftop, but it should not be mistaken for an open-air hot spring.

Beppu Showaen: every cottage has a private onsen, not every cottage an outdoor one

All nine detached cottages have private natural baths. The room categories split between hinoki indoor baths and rock-built open-air baths. Mihotsukushi and Kiritsubo have rock open-air baths; Wakana has an open-air bath plus an indoor hinoki bath. Check the exact category before assuming “private onsen” means “private rotenburo.”

There is another option if you do not want to pay for one of those room types: two private outdoor family baths, Sen no Yu and Man no Yu, are complimentary for guests and used in 50-minute turns. Guests choose a time in check-in order between 3 and 10 pm. It guarantees a slot once selected, but a late arrival may find the most convenient times already taken.

Stone-built private outdoor bath at Beppu Showaen

Showaen describes its spring as a sodium-sulfate / bicarbonate spring, 68°C at the source, pH 8.1, with a flow rate of 50 litres per minute. The baths are free-flowing, with water added. Those numbers describe the source, not the pool temperature.

The property is outside the station area. It offers a scheduled complimentary shuttle for overnight guests; if you expect to go back and forth into town, AMANEK is easier. Tattoo policies for the private baths are not clear enough to infer permission, so confirm directly if needed.

Umino Hotel Hajime: public sea views, with private baths tied to room names

The hotel’s top-floor Asahi-no-Yu has a public indoor bath, open-air bath and sauna overlooking Beppu Bay. It opens 5–9 am and 3 pm–midnight, so an early start for sunrise does not require leaving the hotel. The spring is listed as sodium bicarbonate / chloride, with a source temperature of 56.3°C. That is not the temperature of the bathing pool.

The hotel says all of its baths, including guest-room baths, use hot-spring water. That does not mean all rooms have a special sea-view tub. Its sea-facing inventory includes standard rooms as well as rooms with a panoramic tub, ceramic tub or half-open-air bath. If you want to bathe with a direct sea view in private, book by the exact bath type, not by “sea-side” alone.

Open-air bath overlooking Beppu Bay at Umino Hotel Hajime

Umino Hotel Hajime bars guests with tattoos from its Asahi-no-Yu public bath. The hotel treats private in-room baths separately; call before booking if you need to know whether your room’s bath is available to you.

What changes the decision

Choose AMANEK when a public, elevated rotenburo is enough and you want to stay near the station. Showaen is the clearest option for couples or families who need to bathe together in a private open-air setting; decide whether you need that bath in the room or can use the timed family baths. Umino Hotel Hajime is for guests who want the sea to be part of the bath view, but a special in-room tub requires a specific room category.

Compare the room category, total price for matching dates and meal plan, and cancellation terms. Umino Hotel Hajime bars tattoos from Asahi-no-Yu; ask each other property about its own bath rules before relying on a private-bath room.
