Beppu Onsen Hotels Without a Car: Station, Kitahama Bus Stop or Shuttle?

Choose a Beppu hotel by arrival: Onyado Nono by JR, Nishitetsu at Kitahama buses, or Showaen’s scheduled shuttle and private spring bath.

Checked: September 27, 2026

In Beppu, the easiest hotel without a car depends on where you arrive. Stay at Onyado Nono Beppu if you are coming by JR and want to be at the station in a minute. Nishitetsu Resort Inn Beppu is the straightforward choice for airport or highway buses to Kitahama. Beppu Showaen is farther from town, but its scheduled complimentary shuttle can take you to a detached cottage with a private natural bath.

This is mainly a last-mile comparison: a short walk and a scheduled shuttle solve different problems. If you are still weighing ryokan against city hotels, see the Beppu onsen accommodation overview; for the private-bath trade-off at the two traditional inns, compare Showaen and Yumesaki.

Onyado Nono Beppu: simplest if JR is your main connection

The hotel is about a one-minute walk from JR Beppu Station. That saves a transfer when you arrive by train, and it is handy if you plan to leave early the next morning or want to drop your bags before heading to Kannawa or Myoban.

Its 13th-floor, gender-separated baths use the hotel’s own Beppu spring and are open from 3 pm until 10 am the next day. There are also seven private baths, used on a first-come basis for about 45 minutes. Five are labeled natural hot spring: Kankaiji, Kamegawa, Shibaseki, Kannawa and Hamawaki. The Horita and Myoban rooms are silky baths, not natural onsen. So the hotel offers variety, but not seven different natural springs.

The published tattoo rule restricts entry to the baths, with a stated exception for small tattoos that can be fully covered by an 8 × 10 cm cover sticker. Do not assume that the private baths have a broader exception; the hotel does not state a blanket exemption for them.

Nishitetsu Resort Inn Beppu: step off the bus and check in

The hotel is about a minute from Beppu Kitahama bus stop and the bus centre, while JR Beppu Station is roughly a ten-minute walk away. If your airport limousine or highway bus arrives at Kitahama, staying here avoids hauling bags to the station and back.

The onsen offering is more straightforward than Nono’s: a gender-separated public bath on the second floor with indoor and semi-open-air pools. It is described in accommodation listings as filtered and recirculated, with water added; it is not a free-flowing bath. There is no private bath or in-room natural onsen.

That can be perfectly adequate if you plan to visit Kannawa, Myoban or a municipal bath during the day and want one more soak at the hotel. If you need a private bath to bathe together, the convenient bus stop does not compensate for the missing facility.

Beppu Showaen: private water, but plan around the shuttle

Showaen sits away from the station and offers overnight guests complimentary pickup from Beppu Station, Beppu Kitahama or the station-front area. The current schedule gives a 2–5 pm pickup window and 9–11 am for drop-offs. Contact the property to arrange the trip; it is not a shuttle that runs whenever you are ready.

The trade-off is a detached cottage with a private natural hot-spring bath in every room, either a hinoki indoor bath or a rock-built open-air bath. There are also two complimentary private outdoor family baths, each used for a 50-minute turn. Showaen lists its source as 68°C, pH 8.1 and 50 litres per minute; water is added to the free-flowing spring. Source temperature is not the bath temperature.

This suits a stay where you arrive in the afternoon, settle in, bathe and stay on site. It is less convenient if you expect to head back to central Beppu for dinner or make several trips during the evening. Tattoo rules for the private baths are not clear from the public information, so ask before booking if that is a deciding factor.

Pick the connection you will actually use

For one night with an early JR departure, Nono keeps the morning simple. For a direct airport-bus arrival at Kitahama, Nishitetsu reduces luggage handling. Showaen makes sense when the shuttle times fit and you want the room’s private onsen to be part of the stay.

Compare total cost rather than room price alone: airport or station transfers, meals, bathing tax and cancellation terms can change the picture. At Showaen, confirm the shuttle arrangement before choosing a train or bus; at Nono, remember that two of the private baths are silky baths rather than natural hot springs.
