Umi no Hotel Hajime: Is a Seaview Room Onsen Worth the Upgrade?

All 35 rooms at Umi no Hotel Hajime have private onsen baths. Compare city-side family layouts with Beppu Bay views and upgraded open-air room baths.

Checked: September 27, 2026

At Umi no Hotel Hajime, the choice is not between a room with hot-spring water and one without. All 35 guest rooms have onsen baths. The city-side rooms keep the private soak while often offering more family-sized layouts; the seaward rooms add Beppu Bay views, and selected categories add a ceramic, semi-open-air or observatory bath.

Decide whether the view needs to follow you into the bath

The hotel groups rooms into seaward and city-side categories. The city side includes twin, Japanese-Western and larger Japanese-style rooms, with capacities that can suit families and groups. Choose it if the room’s job is a private soak and a comfortable place to sleep; you can still use the top-floor bath for a bay view.

On the sea side, a standard twin or Japanese room buys the outlook. Specific room names—such as the observatory bath, ceramic bath or semi-open-air bath—are the ones to check if you want to look toward the bay while bathing in private. “Sea view” by itself does not guarantee a particular bath shape. The named semi-open-air rooms accommodate up to four; verify the capacity and exact bath for the room being sold on your date.

The public bath can cover the sunrise view

Asahi-no-Yu occupies the top floor, with a large public bath, an open-air bath and a sauna facing Beppu Bay. It is open from 5 to 9 am and 3 pm to midnight. If you are comfortable with a shared, gender-separated bath, a city-side room plus an early visit can deliver the sea-and-onsen part of the stay without paying for a private sea-view bath.

The spring is classified as sodium bicarbonate / chloride water at 56.3°C. That is the source temperature, not a room- or bath-water reading. Tattoos are prohibited at Asahi-no-Yu; rules for private guest-room baths are unconfirmed.

Dinner and the October parking change

The hotel offers room-only, breakfast and two-meal plans. Dinner is limited to a small number of groups each day, so select it when booking if you want the hotel’s meal; do not count on adding it at check-in. For a night out around Kitahama, room-only leaves more flexibility.

JR Beppu Station is about a 15-minute walk away, and the Beppu Kitahama bus stop is about five minutes on foot. Check-in starts at 3 pm and checkout is at 10 am. Parking costs ¥880 per car per night for stays from October 1, 2026; older booking pages may still show the previous fee.

Children are accepted. An August 2026 notice sets a ¥2,750 facility fee for children aged one to five; bedding and meals depend on the plan. The hotel has lifts. Step-free access from the lift to each room, the restaurant and public bath is unconfirmed; ask about the route for your room if mobility is a concern.

If you are weighing another bay-facing property, compare Beppu’s seaview onsen hotels. For getting around without a car, use the Beppu transport guide and area guide.

Umi no Hotel Hajime is easiest to justify when you want the bay view in the room or need one room category for a larger family. If the shared top-floor bath is enough, the city side keeps the in-room spring while leaving more of the budget for dinner or the rest of the trip.
