Bettei Haruki, Beppu: In-Room Onsen or Private Bath?

Compare Bettei Haruki’s four in-room onsen rooms with two rooms that use three private baths. Check meal plans and bath access before choosing.

Bettei Haruki has six rooms, split between four with a semi-open-air hot-spring bath of their own and two that use three private baths on the property. Choose by how often you want to soak: an in-room bath is there whenever you are, while the shared private baths follow set hours and may require coordination.

This six-room inn is a good fit for a quiet Kannawa stay with private bathing and meals served in the room. It is not a station-side hotel with a large public bath, sauna or pool. The inn offers room-only, breakfast and two-meal plans; breakfast and dinner are served in the guest room.

Nazuna8-tatami Japanese room, tatami sitting area and garden deck; up to 3Semi-open-air hot-spring bathSimilar private-bath setup to Seri
Gogyo10-tatami Japanese room with sitting area; up to 4Semi-open-air hot-spring bathMore room for a group of up to four
Hakobe10-tatami Japanese room with sitting area; up to 4Semi-open-air hot-spring bathLooks onto a garden pond
HotokenozaUpstairs 10-tatami Japanese room with a wide veranda; up to 4NoUses the three private baths; closest to the road, where large vehicles may be heard or felt
SuzunaJapanese-Western twin room with dining table; up to 2NoThe clearest choice if you want proper beds and do not mind walking to a private bath

The room names can be easy to skim past on booking sites, so check the exact room description before paying. If you expect to bathe after check-in, before bed and again in the morning, Seri, Nazuna, Gogyo or Hakobe removes the need to wait for a shared bath. For one evening soak and another in the morning, Hotokenoza or Suzuna may be enough if the rate works better.

The three private baths have different hours

Nadeshiko, Kikyou and Suzushiro are private-use baths described by the inn as natural, free-flowing hot springs. Nadeshiko and Kikyou close at 11 p.m. and reopen from 7 to 10 a.m. Suzushiro is open until midnight and again from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. Kikyou’s stone tub is sized for up to three adults.

For the two rooms without an in-room bath, privacy is still part of the stay; what you give up is access at any hour. The three baths have operating windows, and another party may be using one when you want it. The inn’s current reservation procedure should be confirmed if a particular time matters. Guests who often bathe in the middle of the night or want a spontaneous pre-dawn soak are better matched to one of the four in-room-bath rooms.

Spring water and what is not published

The inn describes its four in-room baths and three private-use baths as hot-spring facilities. Room pages say the in-room baths use 100% source water; the private baths are described as free-flowing. In a 2025 public response, the inn called its spring a simple hot spring associated with Kannawa. Current source temperature, bath temperature and pH are unconfirmed.

Room dining changes the shape of the stay

Haruki offers room-only, breakfast and two-meal plans. Meals are served in the guest room. Dinner is seasonal kaiseki built around Oita ingredients, with Bungo beef and Seki fish available as selected add-ons.

If the inn itself is the evening’s main plan, a two-meal stay keeps the night simple: check in, bathe, eat in the room, then return to the bath. Room-only makes more sense if dinner is already planned in Kannawa or central Beppu. A breakfast plan sits between the two, leaving dinner open while keeping breakfast at the inn. Room dining can help families, older travellers and anyone who would rather not get dressed and cross to a dining room after bathing; for an all-day itinerary, a full meal plan may tie you to an earlier arrival than you want.

Meal plans come with an earlier arrival deadline

Check-in begins at 3 p.m. Meal plans have an earlier final arrival than room-only stays:

PlanFinal check-inCheck-out
Breakfast or two meals6 p.m.11 a.m.
Room only8 p.m.10 a.m.

If dinner is included, a late arrival is not as easy to absorb as it would be at a large hotel with a 24-hour front desk. Build the route around the 6 p.m. cutoff; if a delay is possible, contact the inn before booking or choose a plan that does not depend on dinner service.

Getting there, tax and guest policies

JR Beppu Station is about 12 minutes away by car, and Beppu Interchange about five minutes. The inn recommends a bus or taxi from the station; this is not a practical walk with luggage. Six free parking spaces are listed, with no advance reservation required on the room information. No dependable scheduled free shuttle from the station is confirmed, so ask the inn if a transfer is essential. For more context, see the Beppu stay-area guide or the Beppu without a car guide.

Beppu’s bathing tax changed in 2026, while some room pages still show the old flat ¥150 amount. The current rate depends on the taxable lodging-and-meal total:

Taxable totalBathing tax per guest, per day
¥6,001–¥50,000¥250
Over ¥50,000¥500
Under ¥6,001A lower bracket applies; check the city’s current table

Guests under 12 are exempt. Confirm the amount on your plan or at checkout rather than relying on an older room-page note; a two-meal plan can change the taxable total.

The inn uses phrases such as “adult hideaway” in its branding, but a single, consistent policy for children’s ages, bedding and meals is not clearly published across its pages. Booking listings also conflict. Before choosing a non-refundable rate, give the inn the child’s age and the exact room name, then confirm bedding and meal arrangements. For a group of up to four, Gogyo and Hakobe have an in-room bath; Hotokenoza also sleeps four but is the road-facing room and may be less suitable for light sleepers.

Haruki has no large gender-separated public bath. Guests with tattoos can choose an in-room bath or reserve one of the three private-use baths, but should call the property first to check which arrangement is permitted.

A quick room decision

  • Two people, several soaks, room time matters: Seri or Nazuna.
  • Three or four guests who want an in-room bath: Gogyo or Hakobe; Hakobe faces the pond.
  • Two guests who prefer beds and can follow bath hours: Suzuna.
  • A group of up to four looking to avoid an in-room-bath upgrade: compare Hotokenoza’s rate, but account for its road-side noise warning.
  • A large public bath, sauna, pool or nightlife by the station is the priority: choose another kind of Beppu hotel.

For a broader comparison, see the Beppu onsen ryokan guide and the Beppu family onsen hotel comparison.

Check whether the selected room has an in-room semi-open-air bath before comparing rates.
