Zao in Late October and Early November: Fading Leaves, Ropeway Changes and Road Closures

Late October into early November is a changeover, not an extension of peak autumn. Yamagata Tourism lists the usual Zao range foliage season as late September to late October, while the Echo Line’s high-altitude road is expected to close for winter in early November. The exact leaf colour depends on the year; the transport changes, however, already have dates posted for 2026.

The 2026 ropeway dates that change your route

Zao Chuo Ropeway lists an 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. schedule through October 31, then shortens its hours to 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m. from November 1. More importantly, the company says the Chuo Ropeway and Central No. 1 Lift will close for winter maintenance from November 4 through November 27; Sky Cable will operate as the access route to the Central Highlands during that period.

That means an October route using the Chuo Ropeway cannot simply be copied into mid-November. Recheck the start station, lift connections and walking route. Zao Ropeway to Jizo Summit is a separate system, with its own live operation and weather notices.

The Echo Line has a separate winter deadline

Zao Town currently lists the 2026 Echo Line closure as planned from November 4 at 5 p.m. Conditions may force daytime restrictions before then if the road freezes. Do not make the Okama crater the guaranteed centrepiece of an early-November trip; check official road status shortly before departure and again on the day.

The seasonal summit bus has its own endpoint too: Yamagata Kotsu lists the direct Katta Summit service as daily through October 25, 2026, subject to road closure. After that date, a public-transport itinerary to the crater needs a different plan.

What still works when the highland plan changes

The hot-spring town remains a practical base after the summit road and one ropeway route close. Depending on the day, keep the trip to an operating ropeway, a short town walk and an indoor or communal bath. The large outdoor bath is seasonal and should not be treated as a guaranteed November option; check its current closure notice.

If your main goal is the fullest mountain foliage, choose a date earlier in the usual season and follow current reports. If you are more interested in the onsen town, a later visit can still work, provided you plan around the equipment and road changes instead of the October map.
