Hikawa Bijin no Yu vs Shikisō: Which Yunokawa Bath Fits?

Both baths cost ¥700 for regular adult admission. Compare opening hours, morning bathing, sauna, outdoor setting, water systems and access before choosing.

Hikawa Bijin no Yu and Shikisō have the same standard adult bath admission, but they suit different days. Choose Hikawa for an evening soak; Shikisō is the earlier option, with a wooded outdoor setting and a separately priced Finnish-style sauna.

Neither facility should be described as having every pool supplied by untreated, 100% flow-through water. Hikawa’s available description confirms only some baths as flow-through. Shikisō describes a spring-fed bath while also disclosing circulation equipment in its indoor and outdoor pools.

Hikawa reopened on July 28, 2026 after being closed from March 30. The city’s current operating summary sets the hours, weekly closure and adult price above. Shikisō’s hot-spring maintenance closure from January 24 to February 6, 2026 has ended; check the inn’s news page for any later service change.

The sauna changes the price comparison

Hikawa’s standard ticket covers a bath. At Shikisō, sauna admission is a separate product; add the bathing fee only if you also want to use the bath.

Shikisō optionWeekdayWeekend / holiday
Sauna admission¥1,480 (about HK$74 / NT$302)¥1,680 (about HK$84 / NT$343)
Bath add-on for sauna users¥300 (about HK$15 / NT$61)¥300 (about HK$15 / NT$61)
Sauna plus bath¥1,780 (about HK$90 / NT$364)¥1,980 (about HK$100 / NT$405)

If your plan is one uncomplicated soak, the sauna rate should not be folded into the base comparison. If you already want a longer sauna-and-bath session, Shikisō offers something Hikawa does not position as a central feature.

Morning or evening?

Shikisō has a distinct advantage before the day begins: its morning bathing window runs from 6 to 9 a.m., followed by cleaning before ordinary day admission resumes at 10. It can work before an Izumo Taisha visit or a drive toward Matsue, provided you are staying nearby or have a car. Do not assume every additional facility, including sauna service, is available during the morning slot; check the current notice.

Hikawa does not open until 10 a.m., but stays open until 9:30 p.m., with last reception at 8:30. It is easier to use after a day of sightseeing, especially when you only want to bathe and leave. Shikisō’s ordinary day-use hours also run until 9:30 p.m.; the public-bath hours for overnight guests should not be treated as extra time for day visitors.

Two different outdoor settings

Hikawa’s appeal is scale: it is a public bathhouse with a broad outdoor pool and trees around the bathing area. Shikisō leans into its wooded foothill setting and seasonal scenery. Choose based on whether you want an open public-bath layout or a more enclosed, green backdrop; scenery alone does not guarantee a quiet visit, particularly on busy weekends.

Read the water information carefully

Hikawa uses the Yunokawa natural spring. An older Shimane tourism note identifies one of its two outdoor pools as flow-through. The 2026 reopening announcement reconfirms the facility’s hours and prices, but does not publish a new full water-treatment table for each bath. The careful description is therefore “some baths are identified as flow-through,” not “the whole facility is 100% flow-through.”

Shikisō’s own page uses the term “source-flow” and also says circulation equipment is installed in the indoor and outdoor baths. Both statements belong in the comparison. The property uses the local natural spring, but the available information does not support calling every pool pure flow-through.

Source temperature is not bath temperature, either. Hikawa’s area information lists a 50.5°C source and pH 8.4; Shikisō lists a 50.2°C source, but its current text page does not give a facility-specific pH. Neither figure is a measured temperature of the bath pool.

Getting there

Neither bath is directly beside Shobara Station. Hikawa is listed at about a 25-minute walk and Shikisō at roughly 20 minutes. The difference is modest with no luggage, but a walk can feel longer in summer heat or rain. A car is simpler for visiting the baths as part of an airport or Izumo-area drive; check parking and the day’s opening status before setting off.

For a third option with private baths and a more explicit 100% flow-through claim, compare Yumoto Yunokawa’s day-use bath. The three-facility Yunokawa overview helps if you are choosing the whole onsen area rather than these two baths alone. Other nearby plans include the Tamatsukuri day-use guide and Matsue Shinjiko day-use baths.
