Where to Stay in Tamatsukuri Onsen: Onsen-shita, Himegami Hiroba or the Lakeshore?
Most Tamatsukuri inns line the Tamayu River; one is by Lake Shinji. Compare Onsen-shita, Himegami Hiroba, Onsen-kami and lakeshore access for your route.

Most Tamatsukuri ryokan sit along the Tamayu River. For a short stay, the useful question is less “Which hotel is closest to the centre?” than “Where will I arrive with my bags, and how do I leave the next morning?” The airport-link bus calls at Onsen-shita, Himegami Hiroba and Onsen-kami in that order. They are practical reference points for the riverside area, but they are not interchangeable hotel drop-offs: check your property’s directions and whether it offers a station transfer.

The first three are parts of the same riverside onsen district. These are planning descriptions, not strict neighbourhood borders; individual hotels can sit between stops. Use the official bus map and your chosen inn’s directions for the final walk.
Himegami Hiroba is the practical centre for an evening walk
The Himegami Hiroba stop is close to a covered footbath and the central stretch of the hot-spring town. Staying nearby makes it easier to step out after dinner without turning the evening into a taxi or bus plan. That matters if your idea of Tamatsukuri includes a slow walk by the river rather than an early return to the room.
There is a trade-off: “central” only helps if you actually want to go out. If you plan to have dinner at the inn and use its baths, an upper-end property may suit you just as well. Read the meal and bath schedule alongside the map; a short distance is less useful when dinner, gender-swapped public baths or an early check-out already sets the evening’s rhythm.
Onsen-shita and Onsen-kami solve different transport problems
The airport-link bus serves the three riverside stops in sequence, and its operator says the timetable is shown for Onsen-shita; arrival times at the other two stops are close. For a flight-linked arrival or departure, compare your hotel’s access instructions with the stop sequence before reserving. Do not assume every inn is beside the stop just because it is in Tamatsukuri.
Onsen-shita can make luggage handling simpler when your first or last leg is by bus. Onsen-kami makes more sense if you have a specific reason to stay toward the upper district, such as visiting Tamatsukuri-yu Shrine or spending most of the time at the property. The right choice depends on the actual inn and your route; the stop name alone cannot tell you how many minutes you will walk.
Lake Shinji is a separate stay, not another riverside block
Tamatsukuri International Hotel is identified by the local accommodation association as the resort’s lakeside property. Its own site places it on Lake Shinji and says it is about a five-minute drive from the onsen street. That gives the hotel a different rhythm: a lake view, on-site dining and a bath facing the water, rather than an easy post-dinner walk to the footbath and shops.
Choose the lakeside location if the hotel itself is part of the plan or if you are travelling by car. If you want to wander between several riverside inns, stop at the footbath or visit the shrine on foot, stay in the river district and treat the lake hotel as a separate excursion.
JR Tamatsukuri Onsen Station is not the onsen street
The JR station shares the resort’s name, but it is not in the middle of the inn district. The station-to-town leg requires a local bus, taxi or a longer walk. Some ryokan provide pick-up at set times or by prior arrangement; check the property’s current rule instead of relying on an old timetable or assuming a shuttle runs all day.

Before booking, map the first morning connection as well as the arrival. A room that saves a few minutes after check-in may be the wrong one if it leaves you hauling bags to an early bus the next day.
