Soan Kosumosu or Gettouan? A Central Ryokan or a Hillside Cottage
Compare central Kosumosu’s private-use baths with Gettouan’s in-cottage open-air tubs; Gettouan is farther from town and has no station shuttle.
Checked: September 27, 2026 The practical difference between Soan Kosumosu and Gettouan is how much of your stay you want to spend at the inn. Soan Kosumosu sits near Yufuin’s central sights and lets main-building guests use shared private baths when vacant. Gettouan is a hillside property of detached cottages, each with its own open-air bath; getting there currently means arranging a taxi or other ride.
| Soan Kosumosu | Gettouan | |
|---|---|---|
| Room setup | Main-building rooms plus detached villas | 18 detached cottages: 12 in the main area and six in the annex |
| Private bathing | Two first-come private-use bath sets; detached rooms have their own open-air bath | Every cottage has a private open-air bath |
| Shared baths | Gender-separated public baths; private-use baths have indoor and outdoor sections | Gender-separated public baths, also with outdoor sections |
| Town access | About five minutes on foot to Lake Kinrin; station is around a 15-minute walk | About eight minutes by taxi from Yufuin Station |
| Pickup | Call when you arrive at the station; no advance reservation | Station shuttle is currently suspended |
At Soan Kosumosu, choose between location and an in-room bath
For the main-building rooms, privacy does not automatically mean a bath in the room. Guests can use two private-use bath sets without a reservation, on a first-come basis. The listed hours are 3–11 pm and 6:30–10 am. Each set has an indoor and an outdoor section, but availability is not guaranteed at the time you want to bathe.
The detached rooms remove that timing question: each has a private open-air bath that can be used 24 hours. That makes the upgrade useful for late-night or early-morning bathing, not just for a more secluded room. The catch is that you are paying for both the room category and the in-room bath, so compare the actual plan rather than assuming every Kosumosu room includes one.
Gettouan takes the opposite approach. All 18 cottages have private open-air baths, so there is no room-category check just to confirm the core feature. You still have to choose between the main-area and annex cottages, which differ in style and guest conditions, but every cottage comes with an outdoor bath.

The address changes how you plan the night
Soan Kosumosu is a practical base if you want to stroll around Yufuin. Lake Kinrin is about five minutes away, and the inn is roughly a 15-minute walk from the station along the shopping street. Guests who prefer not to walk can call for pickup after reaching the station. The inn’s location makes it easier to combine a town visit with dinner and a soak without arranging a separate ride.
Gettouan is deliberately removed from that daytime circuit. The official access page estimates an eight-minute taxi ride from the station and says its shuttle service is suspended. If you plan to stay on the grounds after check-in, that setting may suit you; if you want to dip back into town for a meal or shops, count the taxi both ways.
Soan Kosumosu fits travelers who value a central base and are comfortable using a shared private bath unless they book a detached room. Gettouan is the simpler pick when an open-air bath in your own cottage is non-negotiable. Compare the same dates, meals, room capacity and cancellation terms, and include the extra transport cost for Gettouan.
