Kaze no Mori in Autumn: A Private Bath in Every Yufuin Cottage

Every Kaze no Mori cottage has indoor and open-air spring baths; larger room categories add space, and station pickup must be booked ahead.

Kaze no Mori works well for an autumn stay if you want to spend the day in town or around Lake Kinrinko, then come back to a bath that is yours to use whenever you like. Oita Prefecture gives Mount Yufu a usual foliage window from late October into mid-November, but the timing changes from year to year. There is no guarantee that a particular date will bring a red hillside—or a clear view from your cottage.

The standard room already has the main benefit

All rooms are detached and include both an indoor and an open-air bath. The onsen page lists 24-hour use and describes the water as spring-fed and free-flowing, with water added for temperature adjustment. “Free-flowing” here does not mean “never diluted.” The source is a sodium-chloride/bicarbonate hot spring; the room page lists pH 9.0.

Kaze no Mori has six room categories, from a compact Standard room to a 104-square-metre Royal Suite with its own dining area. The private baths are common across the categories, so compare floor area, sleeping arrangement, living space and dining privacy instead. The recent Royal Suite is a much larger stay, not the only way to get a private bath.

Plan around the bath, not a shared-bath timetable

There is no need to fit your soak around a public bath’s opening hours. That is handy after an autumn walk when you return late, or if one person wants to bathe before dinner while another prefers to wait. If the foliage is not at its peak, the room’s bathing setup remains the same; the stay does not depend on a particular colour or forecast.

The inn is about a 20-minute walk from Yufuin Station. Its free pickup now requires a full advance reservation: five scheduled arrival slots run from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., with limited seats. Book by 3 p.m. on the day before your stay, using the inn’s stated phone or email contact. Do not arrive expecting to request a ride at the station. If the schedule does not fit your train or bus, plan for a taxi or the walk.

If you are comparing Kaze no Mori with a station-side stay, the Yufuin autumn ryokan guide covers different base styles. For longer-distance connections, see the Yufuin access guide before choosing a pickup slot.
