Gettouan in Autumn: Main Building or Annex?
Compare Gettouan’s 12 main-building rooms and six-room annex: private baths in every room, annex-only bathing and child rules.
Checked: September 27, 2026 At Gettouan, choosing the annex is not how you get a private outdoor bath. All 18 detached rooms—12 in the main building and six in the annex—already have one. The difference is what else comes with the room: the annex has its own private-use open-air bath and a distinct room design, while the main building keeps the shared bathhouse within reach.
| Main building | Annex | |
|---|---|---|
| Room inventory | 12 standard detached rooms | Six special detached rooms themed around traditional tea rooms |
| Private bath in the room | Open-air hot-spring bath in every room | Open-air hot-spring bath in every room |
| Additional bathing | Shared indoor and outdoor bathhouse | Annex guests can use a separate private-use outdoor bath by the Shirataki River |
| Child eligibility | Check the named room and plan | Guests junior-high-school age and younger are not accepted |
| What to compare | Room layout, beds, view and capacity | Same, plus whether the annex-only bath and setting justify the difference for your stay |
What autumn adds to the decision
Gettouan sits on extensive wooded grounds, and the property presents the changing leaves as part of its seasonal setting. That makes the grounds worth time between bathing and dinner. It does not guarantee that one room or bath will have peak colour on a particular November date; foliage timing moves from year to year.
The main-building rooms are not a stripped-back version of the stay. Some, such as Fuzuki, Hazuki and Nagatsuki, are listed with Mount Yufu views and larger tatami layouts; Ayame is a two-person room with beds as well as its outdoor bath. Compare the actual room names for bedding, view and capacity rather than assuming every standard room is identical.
The annex is an adult-only choice, not a family upgrade
The annex’s separate bath and room style may suit two adults who plan to spend most of their time at the inn. It is not suitable for families with children of junior-high-school age or younger. The main building is the option to check if you are travelling with children; confirm the named room’s capacity and child conditions before booking.
There are slopes and steps around the grounds, including between the main and annex areas. In wet autumn weather, guests with mobility concerns should ask the inn about the route from the exact room to the restaurant and baths before committing to a non-refundable rate.
Transport and maintenance notes for autumn 2026
The inn’s access page currently says its station shuttle is suspended. A taxi from Yufuin Station takes about eight minutes, so plan that ride rather than relying on older descriptions of free pickup. The main-building repairs announced for July 6–31, 2026, were date-limited; do not carry that temporary bathhouse closure into an autumn booking. Check the latest notices for any newer work, particularly if the annex-only private bath is a deciding feature.
If you are still deciding between a hillside retreat and a town-centre stay, start with the Yufuin stay-area guide.
