Is Onto Worth a Stop in Nagato Yumoto? A Guide to the Bath and Bus
Visit Nagato Yumoto’s Onto for a deep, naturally flowing spring bath. Compare tickets, replacement-bus stops, walking times and parking before you go.

Onto is one of Nagato Yumoto’s defining stops, but it is easy to misjudge if you arrive expecting a large day spa. There is a men’s and women’s indoor bath, each centred on a deep pool. No outdoor bath, sauna or cold plunge is listed. The point is the spring itself: the building stands above the source, and bathers can see water welling up from the rock below.

The source is called Onto Spring. Published figures give a pH of 9.62 and a natural flow of 131 litres per minute. The water is close to body temperature, so the experience is gentler than a very hot bath. The actual bath temperature can vary; use the current posted reading rather than assuming the source figure is the tub temperature.
The pool is deep enough to matter. At roughly a metre, it may be uncomfortable for small children, shorter bathers or anyone unsteady on their feet. Take care getting in and out. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash and a hair dryer are provided. Towels cost extra: ¥280 for a small logo towel, ¥700 for a bath towel, or ¥900 for a set.

The “first bath” is a private early-morning booking of Onto itself, not an ordinary family bath. The day ticket suits a morning soak followed by a town walk and a second visit.
Shampoo, conditioner, body wash and a hair dryer are included. Towels are extra.

There is no outdoor bath, massage pool, sauna or cold bath; the admission covers a focused spring bath rather than a large spa.
The train is not running on this route
The MINE Line between Asa and Nagato City is still served by replacement buses following storm damage. Some departures stop at “Nagato-Yumoto,” about a 15-minute walk from Onto; others use the stop inside the municipal parking area, “Nagato-Yumoto Onsen,” about a five-minute walk away. Check the actual stop column for your departure. The bus association warns that road delays can disrupt onward connections, so leave a generous buffer if you are connecting to the Shinkansen at Asa.
From Asa, the adult one-way fare to Nagato-Yumoto is ¥770. Two adults making a round trip and paying standard admission spend at least ¥5,060 before towels, meals or travel to Asa; buying two small towels brings that to ¥5,620. This estimate assumes the municipal-parking-area stop is served only where listed; otherwise allow for the longer walk. Departures include local, semi-rapid and rapid services, and the stops are not identical, so check the specific trip rather than searching only for “Nagato-Yumoto.”
By car, use the municipal parking area and walk down to the bath. The route through the bamboo steps is scenic but includes stairs; it is not the only approach to rely on if you have bulky luggage or limited mobility.
Parking is not dedicated to Onto. The municipal lot’s listed rates are:

Onto is a poor fit if your group needs an outdoor bath, several kinds of pools, a shallow family pool or an affordable private room. Its “first bath” requires a ¥30,000 booking of the whole facility.
Onto works best as a short, unhurried stop during a stay in Nagato Yumoto. If your priority is a sauna, outdoor bathing or a broad range of pools, another facility will fit better.
