Unzen Yokayu Private Family Baths: Prices, Booking and What to Check

Yokayu makes sense when the point is sharing one bath: a couple can stay together, and a parent can help a child without splitting up for the men’s and women’s baths. The private-room charge is modest by ryokan standards, though it is not the total bill. Two adults currently come to ¥2,500 for a one-hour room; a child’s admission is added separately.
What the current price covers
Yokayu’s rate page lists the family room at ¥1,400 for one hour. Each adult adds ¥550 and each child adds ¥250.
At those rates, two adults pay ¥2,500; two adults and one child pay ¥2,750. These totals are calculations, not a promise that every room can accommodate that group. The operator does not publish capacity for each room.
The public bath is a different option: ¥550 for a general adult admission, or ¥450 for members, with children at ¥250. If everyone is comfortable bathing separately, the public bath is cheaper. A family room earns its premium through privacy and the ability to stay together, not through a different admission rate.
Yokayu lists six family baths, but its website does not say that all six have an outdoor tub or that guests can request a particular room. If an outdoor bath, step-free access or a specific layout matters, call before setting out. The published page also does not spell out an advance-booking policy for day visitors, so do not assume a room will be waiting when you arrive.
A sulphur spring, with one important temperature distinction
Yokayu describes its baths as using its own free-flowing spring water. The operator identifies the source as Unzen Yusato, a simple sulphur spring with a pH of 2.3. Its listed 41.7°C is the spring temperature, not a published temperature for each bath. The site does not provide a room-by-room table for tub temperature, cooling, circulation or disinfection.
Because the water is acidic and sulphurous, anyone with sensitive skin or a known sensitivity to hot-spring bathing should take the operator’s bathing cautions seriously. Start with a short soak rather than trying to use the full hour in the water; the hour is room time, including changing and washing.
Opening hours are not as clear as the prices
The operator’s current rate and bath pages confirm the prices and facilities but do not show day-use opening hours. Unzen’s tourism bureau lists 9 am–8 pm and no regular closing day, but its listed prices are older than Yokayu’s own rate page. Other directories give different hours and closure information. For a trip that depends on a late visit, a specific room or a bus connection, call Yokayu at 0957-73-2003 before leaving.

Is Yokayu the right private bath for your day?
Choose Yokayu when you want one hour together at a relatively clear room-plus-admission price, or when travelling with a child who needs help. It is less compelling if you are alone and do not need privacy, or if you are paying extra specifically for a guaranteed open-air room. In the latter case, ask what is available that day before making the trip.
