Where to Stay in Unzen Onsen: The Town Centre or Kojigoku?

Compare central Unzen’s bus stop, Jigoku and public baths with quieter Kojigoku stays near Seiunso and Kojigoku Onsenkan.

In Unzen, “near the hot springs” can mean two quite different evenings. Around the town centre, you can leave your inn for a walk through Unzen Jigoku or a quick visit to a local bathhouse. At Kojigoku, the stay is more about the inn, the surrounding forest and the nearby bath. Neither is a separate onsen resort; the question is how much you want to move around after checking in.

The centre gives you more options once you have dropped your bags

The central district is the easier choice for a first visit, especially without a car. Shimatetsu’s Unzen bus centre sits among the main sights, and the tourist association places several central inns by the Jigoku area. Unzen Iwaki Ryokan is next to the geothermal walk; the association lists Unzen Miyazaki Ryokan and Unzen Kyushu Hotel at address 320, in the same central district.

That location matters most around the edges of the day. Unzen Jigoku is free to enter and open around the clock, but there is no lighting at night. Staying nearby makes a short after-dinner walk possible; it does not turn the geothermal area into a lit evening attraction. If you want to see the steam and paths clearly, leave the walk for morning.

The town’s two small community bathhouses make the centre useful even if your ryokan has its own onsen. The tourism association currently lists Shin-yu and Yunosato at ¥200 for adults, both open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Shin-yu usually closes on Wednesdays; Yunosato closes on Tuesdays. They are simple neighbourhood baths, not hotel spas, and temporary closures are possible.

Check the association’s day-use bath directory and the current facility notice before building an evening around one.

Choose the centre if you want dinner options outside your inn, have luggage and a bus connection to protect, or like the idea of a second walk before checkout. It is also the safer default for a short one-night stay when the details of your ryokan’s pickup service are unclear.

Kojigoku suits a stay built around the inn and its bath

Kojigoku is on the outer side of the resort area, at a higher, forested setting. Seiunso describes its location as about 700 metres above sea level in Unzen National Park. Its nearest bus stop is Kojigoku-iriguchi, and the inn says it offers free transport for guests near the Unzen hot-spring town.

That is useful for a car-free stay, but it is not a town-wide shuttle timetable: ask the hotel where it can collect you, when to call and whether it can help with your arrival and departure buses.

Kojigoku Onsenkan is about a five-minute uphill walk from Seiunso. It is a separate public bath with milky, sulphurous water, distinct from the baths in Seiunso’s main building. The walk is short on paper, but it is still a slope; anyone with limited mobility, a stroller or heavy bags should ask the inn about the route before booking.

The bath’s hours and closing day can also affect your plans, so confirm them directly rather than assuming it will be open after dinner.

This side works best if you expect to spend much of the evening at your accommodation and want the nearby Kojigoku bath to be part of the stay. It is less suited to spontaneous trips back to the central streets. Even if you see a bus stop on a map, check the departure direction and current service for the date you travel.

A bus connection does not make every hotel equally easy

There is no sightseeing or circulating bus through town, so your options are the regular route buses or pickup arranged with your accommodation. Shimabara Railway has announced a timetable revision effective October 1, 2026, including changes to service frequency, operating days and times.

Use its stop-by-stop timetable search for the exact stop and travel date; the company’s revision notice explains why older schedules may no longer fit.

For a central stay, the main bus centre is the natural reference point. At Kojigoku, confirm the walk from the stop or arrange Seiunso’s pickup in advance. If you are coming by ferry from Kumamoto, the Shimabara Port to Unzen transfer guide covers the uphill bus leg.

Travellers arriving from Nagasaki or Isahaya can use the car-free Unzen day-trip guide for route context, then ask the chosen inn about the final stretch with luggage.

Let the evening decide

If your ideal Unzen night includes a stroll through the steam fields and the freedom to find a meal or bath nearby, stay in the centre. If dinner, bathing and a quiet evening at the property are already enough, Kojigoku can be a better fit—provided the bus or pickup plan is clear before you reserve.

Do not choose by the address alone. Several properties use “Unzen” in their address even when they are away from the bus-centre walking area. Check the exact map pin, the entrance rather than just the property marker, and what the inn will do with your bags if you arrive before check-in.

Tattoo rules, private-bath access and in-room onsen are property-specific. The area you stay in does not tell you whether a shared bath allows tattoos, whether a private room needs advance booking, or whether the room itself has spring water. Pick the property first, then confirm those details directly; the same check applies to meals and pickup arrangements.

For most one- or two-night visits, there is little benefit in changing hotels just to sleep in both areas. Consider splitting the stay only when a late arrival makes a central first night materially easier, the next property is part of the trip itself, or you have a car and a clear reason to move. Otherwise, keep your bags settled and visit the other side as a short outing.
