Kyushu Onsen Without a Car: 5-, 6- and 7-Day Routes

Plan a 5-, 6- or 7-day Kyushu onsen trip by train and bus, with routes through Beppu, Kurokawa, Yufuin and Aso. Reserve the mountain bus first.

The key constraint on a car-free Kyushu onsen trip is the bus between Beppu, Kurokawa and Yufuin. There are only a few useful departures, some seats need to be reserved, and a missed connection can affect dinner and the next day’s stay. Build the route around that bus first, then book the inns.

DaysRoute shapeBest use of the extra time
5Hakata → Beppu (2 nights) → Kurokawa (1) → Yufuin (1) → HakataA compact loop; expect to change accommodation on most nights
6Same core route, with a second night in Beppu or YufuinLess packing; use the added night for baths or a slower town day
7Hakata → Yufuin → Beppu → Kurokawa (2 nights) → Uchinomaki / Aso → KumamotoAdd a mountain-area stay and finish in Kumamoto rather than forcing a return loop

Five days: the compact loop

Take a JR train from Hakata to Beppu and stay two nights. On the current JR Kyushu timetable, Yufuin no Mori No. 3 leaves Hakata at 10:11 and reaches Beppu at 13:31 on operating dates. It is all-reserved seating, and some dates use Limited Express Yufu at the same time instead; check the calendar for your travel day before planning lunch or check-in around it.

Use Day 2 for Beppu rather than moving hotels. Its bath districts are spread out, so choose one area—Kannawa and the Jigoku area, Myoban, or the station side—and leave the others for another visit.

On Day 3, the Kyushu Odan Bus has a Beppu departure at 8:10 that reaches Kurokawa at about 10:45 on the current timetable. This is the transfer to secure before booking Kurokawa. Spend the afternoon on one outdoor bath and a walk through the village; save the inn’s own bath for later.

The 15:00 bus from Kurokawa currently reaches Yufuin at about 16:33. That leaves a useful morning for a second bath or lunch, but not much room for a distant side trip. Stay in Yufuin, then take a JR service back to Hakata on Day 5. Yufuin no Mori departures currently include 12:01, 15:56 and 17:17; actual trains depend on the operating calendar, so choose a return that leaves a buffer before your flight.

Six days: add a base night, not another transfer

Keep the same sequence and give the sixth night to either Beppu or Yufuin. Choose Beppu if you want a full day for different bath districts. Choose Yufuin if the ryokan, town walk and time around the inn matter more. Either option reduces the feeling of checking out every morning; adding another destination would do the opposite.

Seven days: continue through Aso to Kumamoto

With a full week, the useful extension is an overnight in Uchinomaki and a finish in Kumamoto. The route becomes Hakata → Yufuin → Beppu → Kurokawa (two nights) → Uchinomaki → Kumamoto. On the current Kyushu Odan Bus timetable, a 15:25 departure from Kurokawa reaches Aso Plaza Hotel around 16:03 and Aso Station around 16:13, before continuing to Kumamoto. Confirm the exact stop you need when booking accommodation; Uchinomaki and Aso Station are not interchangeable locations.

Treat Mount Aso’s crater as an optional excursion, not the reason for the overnight. As checked on September 27, 2026, the Japan Meteorological Agency lists Aso at Alert Level 2, with restrictions around the crater. Access rules can change; check the latest notice before travelling. Uchinomaki’s onsen stay remains worthwhile without going to the crater.

Book the bus before the ryokan

The Kyushu Odan Bus is a limited-capacity route with reservation rules; some sections are reservable and others are not. Sanko Bus currently accepts reservations from two months before travel until the day before for the reservable portions. Check the operator’s booking page for your exact segment and follow its ticket procedure rather than assuming a pass guarantees a seat.

The Northern Kyushu and All Kyushu SUNQ PASS cover the Kyushu Odan Bus, but the reserved-seat process still applies. The Southern Kyushu pass does not cover it. Compare a pass with the actual train and bus legs after you have fixed your dates; a pass is not a substitute for a confirmed seat.

For JR, Yufuin no Mori is all-reserved seating and does not run in the same form every day. JR Kyushu’s calendar shows some dates when Limited Express Yufu replaces it at the same time. Check both the operating calendar and the booking result rather than planning around the train name alone.

Pack for the transfers you have

The five-day route moves most days, so a single manageable main bag makes the bus stops and ryokan approaches easier. A six-day plan gives you a night to unpack at one base. In any version, check directly with your inn before relying on luggage delivery or a station locker; locker sizes and availability are not guaranteed.

Sanko’s payment information says nationwide transit IC cards are not accepted on its buses. Confirm the accepted payment method for your departure, or use the pass and reservation procedure you have arranged. This applies to the Sanko bus leg, not every train or bus in Kyushu.

For a destination-level comparison before choosing the route, see which Kyushu onsen area fits your trip. If you are open to driving, the seven-day self-drive loop uses the mountain stretches differently.
