Kitaoumi no Yu: A Nagahama Onsen for Early Baths and Long Stops
Plan a visit to Kitaoumi no Yu in Nagahama. Compare bath and lounge tickets, overnight rules, sauna facilities, room hire and transport.
Kitaoumi no Yu, part of Kitaoumi Resort in Nagahama, suits two very different visits: a quick bath and sauna from early morning, or a longer stop in its lounge. The lounge can stay open overnight; the baths and saunas cannot. They close from midnight to 6 a.m., and the resort does not admit guests with tattoos. Those details matter more than the “24-hour” label when choosing a ticket.
Choose the ticket around your actual stay
The basic admission ticket covers the baths and sauna, but not the lounge, a towel set or indoor clothing. The Yuttari ticket adds lounge access, a towel set and indoor clothing. Prices vary by day and age:
| Ticket | Visitor | Weekday | Weekend or holiday |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic admission | Adult (13+) | ¥900 (about HK$45 / NT$182) | ¥1,200 (about HK$60 / NT$243) |
| Basic admission | Child (4–12) | ¥500 (about HK$25 / NT$101) | ¥700 (about HK$35 / NT$142) |
| Yuttari, with lounge | Adult (13+) | ¥1,600 (about HK$80 / NT$324) | ¥1,800 (about HK$90 / NT$364) |
| Yuttari, with lounge | Child (4–12) | ¥800 (about HK$40 / NT$162) | ¥900 (about HK$45 / NT$182) |
The facility lists a separate, lower member rate. Joining costs ¥500 (about HK$25 / NT$101), with no annual or renewal fee; the rate can be used from the day you sign up.
| Member ticket | Weekday | Weekend or holiday |
|---|---|---|
| Basic admission, adult | ¥700 (about HK$35 / NT$142) | ¥900 (about HK$45 / NT$182) |
| Basic admission, child | ¥500 (about HK$25 / NT$101) | ¥700 (about HK$35 / NT$142) |
| Yuttari, adult | ¥1,200 (about HK$60 / NT$243) | ¥1,400 (about HK$70 / NT$283) |
| Yuttari, child | ¥800 (about HK$40 / NT$162) | ¥900 (about HK$45 / NT$182) |
For a single basic visit, paying the joining fee does not save money. The ¥200 weekday or ¥300 weekend admission discount takes about two to three visits to offset it. Yuttari saves ¥400 per adult visit, so membership makes more sense if you expect to return. The current main price list does not state a usable admission price for children under four; ask before bringing a toddler.
Extras and private rooms
If you arrive without towels, a towel set is ¥300 (about HK$15 / NT$61); a face towel is ¥160 (about HK$8 / NT$32), a bath-towel rental ¥200 (about HK$10 / NT$40), and indoor clothing ¥150 (about HK$7 / NT$30). The basic ticket already includes use of the baths and sauna, so there is no separate sauna charge.
Day-use room hire is added to a Yuttari ticket between noon and 11:59 p.m.: the Private Room costs an extra ¥1,200 (about HK$60 / NT$243), while a Nest Room costs ¥800 (about HK$40 / NT$162). Day-use rooms are allocated according to availability and cannot be reserved. For an overnight room, the listed starting prices are ¥4,400 (about HK$220 / NT$891) for a Private Room and ¥4,000 (about HK$200 / NT$810) for a Nest Room; contact the resort to confirm the plan and total. The Private Room door does not lock. Nest Room floors are separated by gender and have security locks; the rest of the lounge is shared.
The lounge is available only with the Yuttari ticket. A stay between midnight and 6 a.m. adds a ¥2,000 overnight surcharge (about HK$100 / NT$405). The maximum stay is 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. the next day, but this is not an overnight bathing ticket: the baths and saunas remain closed during the surcharge period. Guests under 18 generally cannot use the facility between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a guardian; the facility notes exceptions for university, junior-college and examination students.
Approximate currency conversions use rates around September 30, 2026 (¥1 ≈ HK$0.04989 / NT$0.2024); your card provider may use a different rate.
What the hot spring and sauna offer
The resort identifies the water as a sodium-chloride and bicarbonate spring, classified as low-osmotic-pressure and mildly alkaline. It rises from a well about 1,500 metres deep. That depth is not a source temperature: the current facility pages do not publish a current pH, flow rate, or treatment breakdown for each bath.
The bathing area has indoor and outdoor pools, jet and bubble features, and a groundwater-fed cold plunge. Each side has two saunas, with different setups. The men’s side has a high-temperature, three-tier tower sauna with hourly automatic löyly from 9 a.m. to midnight, plus a far-infrared sauna. The resort calls the forced-air system above the heater “Ibuki-oroshi,” after the local seasonal wind.
The women’s side has a far-infrared sauna and a mist sauna. Occasional aufguss events are announced separately, so check the day’s schedule if you are visiting for one.
That range of bathing and sauna options is the main draw for a short stop. The lounge is more useful when there is time to rest, work or wait between plans. It has Wi-Fi and a coworking area, but outside food and drink are not allowed; food bought on site is the exception.
Plan around the overnight bathing break
The resort is open around the clock except for maintenance closures, but bathing and sauna hours are 6 a.m. to midnight, with last admission at 11 p.m. From midnight to 6 a.m. the baths are unavailable for cleaning and maintenance. An arrival after midnight can still make sense for a lounge rest, provided the Yuttari ticket and surcharge fit the plan; it will not get you a late-night soak.
The regular closure is the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Check the resort’s monthly notice before setting out, since special holiday hours or additional maintenance can affect a specific date.
Getting there from Nagahama or Kinomoto
The resort is in Takatsuki-cho, Nagahama. From Kinomoto Station, the Kokoku Bus takes about five minutes. From Nagahama Station, the bus or a taxi takes about 20 minutes. Takatsuki Station is around a 30-minute walk away. By car, allow about five minutes from Kinomoto Interchange; the resort also lists a route from Odani Castle Smart Interchange at about 15 minutes and has parking.
The access page does not give a bus timetable, so check the operator’s current schedule before relying on either bus—especially for the return after dinner. If bus times do not line up, the walk from Takatsuki is a substantial final leg, particularly with luggage or in bad weather. For a broader look at nearby facilities, see the day-use onsen comparison for northern Shiga or the Shiga day-use onsen guide.
A few details worth checking before you go
The resort’s rules refuse admission to guests with tattoos. The basic ticket does not include the Yuttari Lounge, even though the lounge operates overnight. If a room, child admission or a particular date matters to your plan, confirm the terms directly rather than assuming the standard ticket covers it.
Travelers without a car can compare options in the Shiga onsen guide for visitors without a car. For tattoo policies, see the Shiga tattoo-policy guide. Other local options include Miyano Onsen and Takarabune Onsen.
Food during a longer stop
The on-site Kitaoumi Shokudo is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (last order 2:30 p.m.) and 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (last order 8 p.m.) on weekdays, leaving a two-hour afternoon break. On weekends and holidays it runs continuously from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The bakery, Pan Kobo Tim, is generally listed as open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you are counting on a meal during a long stay, check the day’s hours: special dates can differ.
