Private and Family Baths in Shiga: Five Day-Use Options Compared

Compare five Shiga day-use private baths by current rates, session length, booking rules and whether public-bath admission or a meal is extra.

Want to bathe with a partner or children without using a gender-separated communal bath? Shiga has several day-use options, but the booking rules and total prices are quite different. Some charge a room fee on top of admission; others require you to book lunch. A hotel having a private bath does not, by itself, mean day visitors can use it.

The five options below have current official information showing that day visitors can use a private bath: Takarabune Onsen, Hamakogetsu, Miyano Onsen, Yapponpon no Yu and Yumotokan. The lowest listed private-bath charge is ¥3,000 for one 50-minute session at Takarabune Onsen, subject to its group minimum. For a rail-friendly stop in Nagahama, Hamakogetsu is near the station; in Koka, Yapponpon no Yu pairs a private room with a larger bathing complex. Yumotokan is a planned meal-and-onsen visit rather than a stand-alone bath ticket.

FacilityPrivate-bath charge and sessionWhat else you payBooking, access and key limit
Takarabune Onsen Yumoto Kotobuki¥1,500 per adult, ¥500 per child below elementary-school age; ¥3,000 minimum total, 50 minutesNo separate public-bath charge is required for this private sessionReservation priority; in lakeside Takashima, with no day-visitor shuttle listed; outdoor bath has no shower
Hamakogetsu¥1,500 per group, 50 minutesDay admission: ¥1,500 per adult; towels includedAdvance reservation; 10 minutes on foot from JR Nagahama Station; day-use admission can be refused when the inn is busy
Miyano Onsen¥5,000 for a pair or ¥5,500 for a family of up to four, one hourPublished as a group rate for the family open-air bathA 2026 price notice supersedes the older spa-page rate; pickup from Konan Station is listed for overnight guests, not day-use visitors
Yapponpon no Yu¥6,000 per room, one hourBath admission is extra: ¥1,300 per adult on weekdays or ¥1,600 on weekends and holidaysTwo private rooms; rural Koka location; ask the facility about bus access and availability
Yumotokan¥7,000 per room, 50 minutesRequires a day-use meal plan, from ¥7,000 per person, plus ¥50 bathing tax per adultBook the private bath with the meal plan; lunch guests can request 1 or 2 p.m., subject to availability; reserved station shuttle available for lunch guests

These are listed prices, not a guarantee of availability on your date. Check the current official page or contact the facility before travelling, particularly if you need a specific time or are bringing young children.

Takarabune Onsen: the lowest private-bath minimum

Takarabune Onsen Yumoto Kotobuki in Takashima charges ¥1,500 per adult and ¥500 per child below elementary-school age for a 50-minute private outdoor bath. Each booking must total at least ¥3,000, so two adults meet the minimum. One adult booking alone still costs ¥3,000; one adult with two children also reaches that minimum.

The private bath runs 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; last reception is 7 p.m. Reservations take priority, and walk-ins depend on an open slot. There is no shower outdoors: rinse with water from the bucket. The gender-separated indoor baths are a separate day-use option.

Families using the day bath can borrow a bath mat, bath chair and toilet-training seat. The facility’s access page gives train directions to Ōmi-Takashima Station but does not list a regular day-visitor shuttle, so check the last leg before going without a car.

Takarabune identifies its spring as a metasilicic-acid-containing cold mineral spring. The published description does not provide a full set of source measurements or treatment details for this particular bath, so those should not be inferred.

Hamakogetsu: a private bath near Nagahama Station

Hamakogetsu day-use itemCurrent details
Bath admission¥1,500 per adult; bath and face towels included
Bathing windows11 a.m.–2:30 p.m. and 3–8 p.m.
Private bath¥1,500 per group for 50 minutes; advance booking required
Two-adult total with private bath¥4,500

The midday break matters if you are planning a long lunch in town.

The private bath does not face Lake Biwa. The inn’s lake-view photographs show its communal bathing area, not the reserved room. Day visitors are also secondary to overnight guests: Hamakogetsu says it may refuse day-use bathing when the inn is busy. Confirm acceptance and the private slot before making the trip.

For families, note that Hamakogetsu’s published age limit—children six and under for mixed bathing—applies to the communal bath. The private-bath page does not state a separate age limit, so ask the inn if this affects your booking. The facility describes its spring as an iron-containing hot spring.

Miyano Onsen: a one-hour family bath, with an updated rate

Miyano Onsen in Koka has a family open-air bath with Shigaraki-style ceramic tubs. The rate notice dated April 21, 2026 sets these prices from May onward:

Family-bath groupPriceSession
Pair¥5,0001 hour
Family of up to 4¥5,5001 hour

The spa page still shows the superseded ¥4,500 and ¥5,000 rates; the newer notice is the current one.

The group rate is the relevant price for this private bath; Miyano lists separate admission prices for its communal bath. The site does not spell out a more detailed age rule for the family rate or the private bath. If your party has more than four people, or you need to clarify whether infants count toward the limit, contact the inn rather than assuming an exception.

Miyano’s day-use hours are listed as 11 a.m.–8 p.m. The spring is classified as a chloride-bearing cold mineral spring, with a published source temperature of 14°C and pH 7.7. Those figures describe the spring, not necessarily the temperature at the tub. The facility does not publish enough detail to claim that every bath is source-flow or untreated.

Yapponpon no Yu: a private room inside a larger spa

Yapponpon no Yu has two private family rooms, each with indoor and outdoor Shigaraki-ware tubs. The room fee is separate from bathing admission.

Day-visitor costWeekdayWeekend / public holiday
Private room, 1 hour¥6,000¥6,000
Adult admission¥1,300¥1,600
Two adults, room plus admission¥8,600¥9,200
Child admission (elementary-school age and younger)¥500¥500
Under age 3FreeFree

Confirm how the facility applies its admission categories to your children when you call.

The facility is open noon–10 p.m.; the family baths have a 9 p.m. last entry. Its rate page includes the bathing wear and a set of towels in the private-bath fee. The operator has two private rooms and asks visitors to call Diamond Shiga for reservations or questions; check whether a room is available before setting out. Public baths, open-air baths, sauna and optional bedrock bathing make this a fuller stay than the smaller inn-based baths. Bedrock bathing costs another ¥530 per adult.

Yapponpon lists a sodium bicarbonate cold mineral spring. Its published description does not say whether the family-room tubs use that water.

Yumotokan: the private bath is part of a meal plan

Yumotokan’s day-use private open-air baths are available to guests using an overnight, lunch or dinner plan. They are not sold as a stand-alone bath session.

Lowest lunch-and-bath cost for two adultsPrice
Lunch plan, 2 people¥14,000
Bathing tax, 2 adults¥100
Private bath, 50 minutes¥7,000
Total¥21,100

The standard lunch plan starts at ¥7,000 per person and requires at least two guests.

Lunch runs noon–3 p.m. Guests can request a private-bath slot at 1 or 2 p.m.; one bath starts sessions on the hour and the other at ten past. Slots are assigned in booking order. Submit online day-plan reservations at least three days ahead. The day-use page does not list a separate child price or minimum age for the private bath.

This option makes sense if a ryokan meal is part of the day you want. For bathing without a set meal, compare the other four facilities first.

Why Biwako Hanakaido is not in the day-use shortlist

Biwako Hanakaido has a 50-minute private bath called Biidoro-no-yu, listed at ¥3,300. It is offered to hotel guests and booked at check-in; the inn does not accept advance reservations for it. Its official page explicitly says day-use bathing guests cannot use the private bath. Day-use guests can use the communal baths under the facility’s separate day-bathing rules, but the private bath should not be treated as an option for a day trip.

Pick by the rule that matters most

For the lowest short-session minimum, start with Takarabune Onsen and accept that its outdoor bath has no shower. Hamakogetsu is the more convenient candidate if your plans already include Nagahama, though the inn may limit day visitors. Miyano has a clear one-hour family rate for up to four people. Yapponpon suits visitors who want a broader spa visit, while Yumotokan is for a booked meal with a private bath added on.

Before booking, separate the private-room fee from admission, meal and tax charges. Also check which of the facility’s age rules apply to communal bathing versus the private room; the published pages do not always answer both questions.
