Obama Onsen Without a Car: Bus Times and a Day-Trip Plan

Obama Onsen is reachable without a car from Nagasaki City on a direct express bus, but the service is sparse: the current timetable shows three departures in each direction a day. A workable day trip is the 9:10 am bus from Nagasaki Station, arriving at Obama Terminal at 10:27 am, then the 4:34 pm return, due into Nagasaki at 5:51 pm. Build the day around that return rather than assuming a later direct bus will appear.

Choose the route around where you are starting

Hamano-yu is not a current option: Unzen City’s August 24, 2026 notice lists the bath as closed. The old hours and fare are background only until the city posts a reopening.

The direct bus is simple; the timetable is not flexible

The Nagasaki Prefectural Bus timetable effective April 1, 2026 lists three direct express departures in each direction:

The 4:34 p.m. return is the practical cutoff for a direct same-day trip to Nagasaki.

Seats are unreserved; passengers board in line. Pay in cash or with a compatible nationwide IC card. The myroute and STLOCAL apps list a ¥2,790 digital round-trip ticket from Nagasaki Station to Obama. Allow a buffer before a train or onward booking because road delays can affect the bus.

Missing the 4:34 pm bus means losing the last scheduled direct express that day. Other public-transport routes may involve a transfer around Isahaya, but their connection times depend on the date; check both legs in the operator’s current planner before treating that as a backup. If the transfer does not work, an overnight stay is safer than planning around an unverified connection.

Visitors arriving by JR, the Shinkansen or Nagasaki Airport can use the Isahaya connection, but it requires a separate timetable check. The Shimabara Railway examples below apply to its published sheet for August 1–September 30, 2026:

A six-hour visit works best with one bath

From Obama Terminal, keep the day local. Hot Foot 105 makes a natural first stop if it is open. The steam-cooking pots stop admitting visitors earlier than the footbath.

After lunch, choose one proper bath. Jyo-kiya accepts day visitors from 9 am and has a hot-spring steam room; Wakihama is closed for equipment work with no reopening date announced; Yunoka begins day use at 3 pm. YUASOBI accepts same-day reservations, while Nami no Yu Akane takes bookings only on the day before or day of use. The Obama day-use bath guide compares the facilities and current caveats.

If you take the 10:27 arrival, a waterfront walk, lunch and one bath leave time to change and get back to the terminal for 4:34. Keep the last hour light. Akane’s sunset appeal may not fit this return: its 50-minute sessions are weather-sensitive, and the timing can leave little margin for the bus. If the bath itself is the evening’s main event, stay overnight or check a separately verified transfer through Isahaya.

From Isahaya: use the timetable for your travel date

The ryokan association estimates the Isahaya–Obama trip at about 50 minutes. The dated Shimabara Railway examples appear in the bus section above; they are not a year-round timetable. Check operating-day symbols and the current sheet for travel after September 2026.

This short window favours Wakihama or Jyo-kiya. Yunoka’s day-use bathing starts at 3 pm, so a 4 pm return from Obama leaves too little time for a 50-minute private session and the walk to the stop. If you are coming from Nagasaki Airport, first confirm the airport-to-Isahaya leg; a hotel shuttle is not a public bus connection.

Around Obama: the waterfront is walkable, but time still matters

Hot Foot 105, the bus terminal, restaurants and several baths sit within the coastal town centre. YUASOBI is about a five-minute walk from Obama bus terminal. From Nishitoyama-guchi bus stop, Nami no Yu Akane is about three minutes on foot; from Obama stop, allow around nine. Wakihama is farther south, though still within the town’s walking area. The Obama town map is useful for visualising the stops.

Hot Foot 105 is a footbath, not a full-body bath. It is normally open 10 am–7 pm from April to October and 10 am–6 pm from November to March; the association lists the third Wednesday of each month, January 4–5, severe weather and spring-source cleaning as closures. Extra notices may apply. Its steam-cooking pots stop admitting visitors earlier than the footbath itself.

Four baths that fit a car-free visit

Wakihama Onsen Bathhouse: low cost, simple facilities

The latest listed single-entry price is ¥400 for adults and ¥200 for children aged three through elementary school. Opening hours conflict across listings: Unzen’s tourism page says 6 am–9 pm, while the 2026 Kyushu 88 listing and a June field report say 5 am–9 pm. Use 6 am as the safe planning time and call before relying on a 5 am start. Wakihama is a traditional indoor, gender-separated bath with no private room, outdoor pool or sauna; it is also currently closed for equipment work, with no reopening date announced.

Its guide ratings are comfort 75, bath variety 50, upkeep 70, atmosphere 60, quiet 70, access 85 and value 95. Treat these as editorial ratings, not operator measurements.

Jyo-kiya: a steam bath for a small extra fare

Jyo-kiya’s public bath is ¥500 for adults and ¥250 for children. The day-use reception window begins at 9 am, and its hot-spring steam room is the main reason to choose it over a basic neighborhood bath. Private family baths run 50 minutes at ¥1,000 per adult and ¥500 per child, with a published ¥2,500 cap. Reception is listed until 9 pm; ask about the last possible start time rather than reading that as a guaranteed bathing end time.

Yunoka: an affordable private bath from 3 pm

The current day-use window is 3–9 pm. A private bath costs ¥1,000 for 50 minutes, with rooftop choices facing Tachibana Bay and an indoor room as a weather backup. Its public bath is ¥500 for adults. The operator’s page is newer than an association listing that still gives a 1 pm day-use start. If you take the direct Nagasaki bus home, the 3 pm private slot is the only practical Yunoka booking before the 4:34 pm departure; confirm availability and allow time to walk back.

Editorial ratings: comfort 95, variety 90, upkeep 90, atmosphere 100, quiet 90, access 95 and value 95. The high atmosphere score chiefly reflects the rooftop view; the indoor room is a separate choice.

Nami no Yu Akane: the sea view is lovely; the direct return is early

Akane’s fully private outdoor bath costs ¥3,000 for 50 minutes for one to four people, with ¥500 for each guest from the fifth onward. Reservations are accepted only on the day before or the day of use. The operator may suspend bathing when waves, wind, a spring tide or high water makes conditions unsafe. This is the least compatible option with Nagasaki’s 4:34 pm direct return if you want the sunset; consider a verified Isahaya connection or an overnight stay instead.

When YUASOBI is the better call

YUASOBI suits a group that wants a private room and steam sauna, not a quick soak. Its six private rooms include a hot-spring steam sauna and cold plunge; rates start at ¥3,000 for one hour or ¥5,000 for two hours for up to four people, with ¥500 for each additional guest. Same-day booking is accepted.

The indoor setting is less exposed to wind and rain than Akane, but the return bus still sets the end of your visit. Check the Akane–YUASOBI comparison before choosing between them.

Two sample routes from town

The standard Nagasaki day trip

Take the 9:10 am direct bus, reach Obama at 10:27, walk the waterfront and have lunch. Choose one bath that fits the clock: Jyo-kiya opens to day visitors in the morning; Yunoka starts at 3 pm. Return to the terminal with time to spare for the 4:34 pm bus. If the priority is a sunset soak, this same-day direct route is the wrong frame; check a later Isahaya connection or stay overnight.

A short visit from Isahaya

The dated timetable example gives roughly 2½ hours between the 1:28 pm arrival and 4 pm return. Choose one nearby bath and skip the longer waterfront circuit. The 3 pm start at Yunoka leaves too little margin; check the current schedule before relying on any connection.

An evening soak with an overnight stay

If the sunset at Akane or a longer YUASOBI session is the main event, do not try to squeeze it into the last direct bus to Nagasaki. Stay in Obama or verify a later connection through Isahaya for your exact date, including the transfer wait and the final service onward. The bath’s published closing time does not guarantee that public transport will still be running.

Details that commonly derail the trip

Do not treat Obama’s regional 105°C spring figure as a bath temperature; individual facilities do not all publish their own source or tub readings. Do not route to Hamano-yu using an old directory schedule: Unzen City’s August 24, 2026 closure notice is the current status, and no reopening notice had been confirmed in the guide’s September 28 check.

Hotel shuttles are not public transport unless the property confirms that day visitors may use them. Settle the return connection before reserving an evening bath. Hot Foot 105 is a footbath, not a full bathing facility.

The simplest choice

For a direct Nagasaki round trip, take the early express and choose one bath before the 4:34 pm return. Jyo-kiya is the flexible daytime pick; Yunoka works if you secure the 3 pm slot. From Isahaya, use the timetable valid for your exact date. If Akane’s sunset or a longer YUASOBI session is the point of the visit, build the return around a checked connection or an overnight stay instead.

The facilities’ public pages do not clearly publish a consistent tattoo policy. Ask the specific bath before travelling if this affects your choice.
