Hamano-yu in Obama Onsen: Closure Status and What to Use Instead
Hamano-yu is temporarily closed after an August 2026 city notice. Check its status, usual rates and nearby bathing options before visiting Obama.
Hamano-yu is a small municipal bath near the entrance to Obama’s hot-spring district, normally open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Unzen City posted a closure notice on August 24, 2026, and its notice listing still included the closure on September 28. Reopening has not been confirmed; do not plan a visit until the city posts an opening date.
The posted ¥300 rate is historical planning information for now
Before the closure, the city and Obama Hot Spring Ryokan Association listed these normal hours and rates. They are historical details, not current admission information.
| Previous listing | Details |
|---|---|
| Normal hours | 6 a.m.–10 p.m. |
| Visitors aged 12 and over from outside Unzen | ¥300 |
| Local adults | ¥150 |
| Children aged 6–11 | ¥100 |
| Children under 6 | Free |
| Effective date of last fee revision | June 1, 2024 |
The city’s notice gives an estimated end point in late October for the work, but an estimate is not a reopening date. No visit should be planned around it without a newer announcement. The notice concerns closure; it does not establish that the bath has permanently shut.
The city estimates the repair work will end in late October, but has not confirmed a reopening date. The previous rates may change before Hamano-yu reopens.
Hamano-yu is a shared indoor bath, not a seaside rotenburo or a private room for couples. For a quick comparison of currently listed alternatives, see the Obama day-use bath guide. For a steam-bath experience later in the morning, Jyo-kiya’s day-use bath accepts visitors from 9 am.
Why the city notice takes precedence
The association’s Hamano-yu profile still shows the usual price and hours. The more recent city notice explicitly names Hamano-yu among the facilities temporarily closed. When a directory page and the municipal operator’s newer notice conflict, the notice is the safer source for a visit decision.
That distinction matters in Obama, where the hot-spring streets are compact enough that a short walk to a closed door can look like a minor detour. If Hamano-yu is the reason for your stop, check Unzen City’s notice again shortly before travelling. If there is no clear reopening update, choose another bath rather than relying on the older listing or a map status.
The city’s announcement names Hamano-yu and Boyoso as closed from August 24; it does not state a permanent closure. Its late-October estimate is only a forecast for the work. The city separately announced Boyoso’s return to service on September 8, but that update does not reopen Hamano-yu. Each facility needs its own explicit status check.
What Hamano-yu was suited to
Under its normal schedule, the early opening made Hamano-yu useful before a bus departure or after an overnight stay in town. Its appeal was straightforward: a local, gender-separated indoor bath at a municipal rate. The listings do not describe private bathing, an outdoor sea-view pool or a sauna, so those are not features to expect if it reopens.
The city and association list the address as 25-19 Kitahonmachi, Obama-cho, Unzen. The town centre is walkable, but there is little reason to make a special trip to this address while the closure remains in effect. For return-bus timing and a broader half-day plan, see the Obama car-free day trip guide. To compare currently listed day-use options, use the Obama Onsen bath guide.
Spring details: do not fill gaps with Obama’s 105°C figure
Hamano-yu-specific source temperature, bath temperature, pH and flow rate are unconfirmed. The district’s 105°C figure is not a Hamano-yu measurement. Before closure, the facility offered an indoor, gender-separated shared bath.
How to read the guide’s ratings
The guide’s historical scores for Hamano-yu are comfort 75, bath variety 50, upkeep 75, atmosphere 55, quiet 70, access 95 and value 100. They describe the bath’s normal service before the closure, not its availability today. In practical terms, its appeal was a very low municipal fare, central location and early opening—not a sea view, private room or extra facilities.
Who it suited before the closure
Solo visitors and early risers who wanted an inexpensive soak were the clearest fit. Couples who wanted to bathe together needed a private facility such as Yunoka, Nami no Yu Akane or YUASOBI. Visitors looking for an outdoor sea view were choosing the wrong type of bath: Hamano-yu was indoors. While the closure remains in effect, all visitors should keep it off the day’s usable itinerary.
Tattoo policy
Hamanoyu’s public listings give no tattoo rule. The bath is currently closed, and the city has not confirmed a reopening date; if it reopens, ask the facility about tattoo access before planning a visit.
Before you go
- Check Unzen City’s latest notice for an explicit reopening statement; do not infer one from the estimated work period.
- Do not budget the old ¥300 fee as a confirmed current price. It is the last posted normal rate, not a confirmed post-reopening tariff.
- Wakihama is not a current alternative: it is also closed for hot-spring equipment work, with no reopening date announced. Check its closure update before considering it again.
For an early soak, Wakihama is not currently a dependable substitute either. Once it reopens, tourism listings give a 6 a.m. start, while the Kyushu 88 Onsen Tour’s 2026 listing and a June field report say 5 a.m.; plan for 6 a.m. unless the bath confirms an earlier opening. Jyo-kiya’s day-use reception starts at 9 a.m. and its public bath costs ¥500, making it the clearer later-morning option. See the Wakihama guide for the conflicting hours.
