Obama Onsen Day-Use Baths: Prices, Hours and Current Closures

Wakihama and Hamano-yu, two of Obama’s budget public baths, are closed. Wakihama has no reopening date; Unzen City estimates Hamano-yu’s repair work will run until late October. Jyo-kiya is the least expensive open option listed here, but day-use starts at 9 a.m.

Choose by the kind of bath you want

The day-use options are spread along the waterfront and town streets. Pick one main bath rather than trying to fit several into a short visit. What the main options actually offer

Wakihama is a neighborhood bathhouse, currently closed for hot-spring equipment work. There is no reopening date. Its published hours and fares conflict:

Jyo-kiya has a public bath and hot-spring steam room. Day-use reception runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; it will not work for a pre-9 a.m. soak.

Yunoka is a ryokan with both a public bath and bookable private baths, including rooftop outdoor options and an indoor room. Its own day-use page lists admission from 3 pm to 9 pm, so do not assume you can use it during a morning visit. The private baths are time-booked and subject to availability; confirm the total price and slot directly.

At Nami no Yu Akane, the outdoor tub sits beside Tachibana Bay, close to sea level. The operator lists a 50-minute private session at ¥3,000 for one to four people, with ¥500 for each additional guest. Reservations are accepted only on the day before or the day of use. High water, large tides or rough weather can make the bath unsafe, and the operator may cancel; towels are not provided and payment is cash only.

YUASOBI offers coin-operated indoor private rooms filled with fresh hot-spring water, with a steam sauna in the private-bath area. Towels are sold; bath products and hair dryers are provided. Same-day booking is accepted.

Two budget baths are temporarily closed

Unzen City says Hamano-yu closed on August 24 for hot-water storage tank work, with the closure expected to last until late October 2026. That is an estimate, not a confirmed reopening date. Its usual 6 a.m.–10 p.m. hours and ¥300 outside-resident fare are still useful background, but should not be treated as current while it is shut. The city’s latest notice listing still includes the closure as of September 28.

That leaves a gap for visitors hoping to bathe before 9 a.m. at a low price: Wakihama has no announced reopening, while Hamano-yu remains within its estimated closure period. Jyo-kiya opens to day visitors at 9 a.m. If an early bath is essential, check the latest municipal and facility notices on the day rather than relying on directory hours.

How the six facilities compare

These ratings are editorial guide scores, not official inspection results. Hamano-yu’s figures describe its usual service before the current closure; availability has to be considered separately.

Spring water and the 105°C figure

Obama’s district-wide source temperature is often given as 105°C. Facility listings describe these springs as sodium-chloride water, but the 105°C figure is not a measurement for each bath.

The cited pages do not give a facility-specific pH or source temperature for every bath. The district figure should not be used to fill those gaps.

Cleanliness notes and the limits of the reviews

There is enough recent guest feedback to see a pattern for Jyo-kiya and Yunoka, but not to call either spotless: Yunoka reviews are mostly positive with occasional specific complaints about dusty corners or bathroom mildew; Jyo-kiya feedback includes praise as well as comments about an older building and dust. Recent facility-level samples for Wakihama, Akane and YUASOBI are thinner, while Hamano-yu is closed. Treat those observations as limited review evidence, not a current inspection.

Which bath fits a couple, family or solo visit?

For two people on the smallest private-bath budget, Yunoka’s ¥1,000, 50-minute booking is the clear starting point. Akane makes more sense when the bay-side setting is the point of the trip and you can accept cancellation risk. Families or friends who want privacy plus a sauna should look at YUASOBI; the steam and cold plunge are part of all six rooms, though anyone sensitive to heat need not use the sauna. Solo visitors who just want a local bath can consider Wakihama after it reopens, or Jyo-kiya at ¥500 when it is open.

Travelling without a car: choose around the return bus

The direct Nagasaki day trip gives a narrow window between arriving at 10:27 am and the 4:34 pm return. Jyo-kiya is the simplest daytime option; Yunoka’s day-use baths begin at 3 pm. A sunset session at Akane may conflict with the direct bus, and late YUASOBI hours do not solve the return journey. Check the car-free Obama itinerary before booking.

Tattoos, children and heat

Tattoo rules are not stated consistently across the facilities; check with the bath you plan to visit. Wakihama and Hamano-yu have shared baths, while Yunoka’s indoor Take-no-yu and YUASOBI’s private rooms allow a family to bathe together. Akane is outdoors, where tides, weather and footing affect access.

YUASOBI’s steam sauna and hot bath may not suit every child. Keep the first soak brief and leave the water if anyone feels unwell.
