Private and Family Baths in Nara: Kamokimi no Yu or Himeshi no Yu?
Compare Nara’s private baths: Kamokimi’s ¥2,500, 90-minute rooms versus Himeshi’s eligibility-based family and care baths. Admission may be extra.

Kamokimi no Yu is the simpler option for two adults: its two private rooms can be booked in 90-minute slots, with no family eligibility condition listed. Himeshi’s Nadeshiko bath is intended for families with a child in third grade or younger, or for someone who needs bathing assistance or wants to avoid exposing a surgical scar. It has indoor and outdoor baths; confirm eligibility and booking details with the operator first.
| Your situation | Better place to ask first | Published charge | Important detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two adults want a private session | Kamokimi no Yu | ¥2,500 per room, plus admission for each person | 90 minutes; the operator does not identify these rooms as outdoor baths |
| Family with a child in third grade or younger | Himeshi no Yu | ¥3,300 per hour | Advance reservation; up to five users; eligibility applies |
| Guest has a surgical scar or cannot bathe alone | Himeshi no Yu | ¥3,300 per hour for the family bath | Ask the facility to confirm that your circumstances qualify |
| A dedicated accessible bathing setup is needed | Himeshi no Yu | ¥2,600 per hour for the care bath | A care or disability certificate is required |
Kamokimi no Yu: the clearer option for a couple
The facility lists two reservable private rooms, both priced at ¥2,500 per 90-minute session. Room I has a tent sauna and television; Room II has a far-infrared sauna. Start times are staggered through the day, and reservations can be made by phone or at reception.
| Cost for two adults | Weekday | Weekend or holiday |
|---|---|---|
| Private room, 90 minutes | ¥2,500 | ¥2,500 |
| Admission, per person | ¥700 | ¥800 |
| Total for two | ¥3,900 | ¥4,100 |
The operator also charges ¥800 admission on designated busy weekdays; check its calendar for your date.
Kamokimi lists outdoor baths in its public bathing area, but does not describe the private rooms as outdoor baths. If you specifically want to bathe outdoors together, ask before booking rather than assuming the private option has the same layout.
The facility refuses guests with tattoos, including tattoo stickers. Its public rules do not describe an exception for private-room users. Don’t rely on the booking format to override that policy.
Himeshi no Yu: a family bath with specific access conditions
Himeshi’s reservable Nadeshiko room has both an indoor and an outdoor bath. It is designed for guests who may find the public bath difficult to use, including families with a child in third grade or younger, people with visible surgical scars, and people who cannot bathe alone because of an injury. The operator says to contact it about other circumstances.
| Himeshi bath | Price and booking | Eligibility or facilities |
|---|---|---|
| Nadeshiko family bath | ¥3,300 per hour; advance booking by phone or at the desk; up to five users | Indoor and outdoor baths; eligibility applies. Ask whether general admission is included and whether the public bath is also available |
| Care bath | ¥2,600 per hour; certificate required | Grab rails, level floor, multipurpose toilet and shower chair |
| General admission | ¥900 adults; ¥400 for children aged three through elementary school | Open 11 a.m.–8 p.m.; last entry 7:30 p.m.; usually closed Tuesdays and New Year’s Day |
Holiday schedules can change. Call ahead if the bath is central to your trip.
Himeshi identifies its water as a simple hot spring but gives no source or bath temperature, or treatment details for the private bath. Its tattoo-entry rule is also unclear; ask the facility before booking rather than assuming entry is allowed or refused.
Location may settle the choice
Kamokimi is in Gose, near the Katsuragi foothills. From Kintetsu Gose Station, local buses serve the facility; drivers have 220 free parking spaces. It fits naturally into a Gose or Katsuragi-area day, not a quick side trip from Nara Park.
Himeshi is inside the roadside-station complex in Mitsue Village. From Kintetsu Nabari Station, take the Mie Kotsu bus to Shikitsu and walk the short distance to the facility. Check the current return timetable before you book a one-hour session; the last admission time is not the same as the last bus home.
Which one should you book?
Choose Kamokimi if you are two adults looking for a private room and can make the trip to Gose. Include the separate admission fees in your budget, and confirm availability for the slot you want.
Call Himeshi before booking if you are travelling with a young child, need assistance or cannot use the regular changing and bathing areas. Describe your needs: eligibility is specific, and the operator does not say whether general admission is included in the private-room charge.
For an ordinary public bath rather than a private one, compare the three Nara day-use options or browse the full Nara day-use onsen guide.
