Nobeoka Onsen Choice: Hourigawa’s Mountain Spring or Healthtopia’s City Spa?

Compare Hourigawa’s natural mountain spring with Healthtopia’s city spa, including water type, ¥520 bath admission, access and facilities.

Checked: September 27, 2026

The same ¥520 bath ticket buys a very different outing in Nobeoka. At Hourigawa, the point is the setting: a remote natural spring below Mount Okue, with an outdoor bath looking toward the mountains. Healthtopia is closer to town and built for a longer indoor visit, with pools and family spaces alongside its baths. Decide first whether you want a natural source or a more accessible facility day.

Hourigawa: a destination in its own right

The spring source is about 30°C and is heated for bathing. The city describes it as a weakly alkaline sodium-bicarbonate spring. An outdoor rock bath faces the mountain scenery, while the indoor bath also looks onto the surrounding forest. It is a quieter, smaller-scale stop than a large urban spa; bring a towel, as rentals are not available, though towels are sold on site.

Travel time is the main constraint. Estimates range from about 50 minutes from central Nobeoka to 85 minutes from Nobeoka Interchange and 90 minutes from JR Nobeoka Station. Those are different starting points and routes, not a single door-to-door guarantee. There is no simple train-and-walk visit.

The road into the valley is part of the plan. Check the operator’s latest notice for Route 207 restrictions and roadworks before setting off, especially after heavy rain or if you will drive back near closing time. Hourigawa makes more sense when the mountain scenery, hiking, river or a nearby overnight stay is already on your itinerary.

Healthtopia: easier access and more to do indoors

Healthtopia sits in Nagahama, about ten minutes by car from JR Nobeoka or Minami-Nobeoka stations. A bus from Nobeoka Bus Center on the Hozai Line takes about 17 minutes and stops at the facility. Adult admission is ¥520 for the baths, ¥520 for the pool, or ¥830 for both. Children’s rates are lower, and the building also has a kids’ area, nursing room and diaper-changing facilities.

The baths include an open-air pool, massage baths, electric baths, sauna and cold bath, with indoor rest areas for use after bathing. It is a practical rainy-day plan or a way to keep children occupied without a long mountain drive. A bath ticket does not include every separately priced cultural facility, so check the admissions page if you want to use those too.

Healthtopia calls its bathing area a “quasi-natural” mineral bath, but the city says the facility heats municipal tap water and runs it through filtration and chlorination. It is not a geothermally sourced onsen. That distinction matters if natural spring water is why you are travelling.

The usual closure is Monday, shifting to a weekday when a public holiday falls on Monday; holiday periods can have separate notices. Its homepage posts the current day’s bath and pool hours and special closures. The facility’s rules also prohibit entry for people with tattoos, so check those rules before visiting.

If you are based in the city or travelling without a car, Healthtopia is the straightforward choice. Hourigawa is worth the drive when the mountain bath is part of the day’s purpose—not as a quick detour between trains.
